I was at work yesterday and my screen saver is a slideshow of photos I have taken in recent years. There was a guy in the office fixing the printer, and saw my screen saver. It was a picture of a AE86 Corolla, he said "Is that a hill climer?", I said "No, its a drift car" he smirked and said "I thought that only went on in America!". I did not say anything and he continued to waffel on about his a-series mini that he used for spints and hillclimbs. I guess he was being sarcastic? but it got me thinking is "drifting" regarded as a bit of a joke? I know getting a RWD car sideways is nothing new, but is making it a motorsport in it own right frowned upon by others involved in say rallying, karting, drag racing or formula ford? Personally I love it and after watching the driftworks display at japfest I want to have a go myself. Mmmmm drifting.........

Let them waffle.
ill continue to enjoy cool cars with lots of power going sideways in demonstrations of frankly awesome car control.

I do think there are many "serious" motorsport types who consider drfiting to be a bit of a joke (based on some conversations I've had). Personally I'd love to have a go but can't afford to risk breaking anything I own!

I don't see Drifting in a serious competition sense - it just isn't the fastest way around a track - but as something fun to watch, who isn't enthralled by the sight of a car going sideways?
Well, my wife possibly but I love it!

That ridiculous thread awhile back on that muppet who wrote his car off and bragged about it ona forum kind of sums up the muppets i mean. Unpaid-for, high powered rwd cars on mummies insewerance ftw!

I think it's very dull to look at. When a car looses its rear in say touring cars and the driver has the skill to get it back, that is awesome, but purposefully doing this time after time, what's the point?
BTW i feel the same about exorbitant burn outs. Whats so good about watching a set of tyres explode??

drifting is good as a fun thing to learn rwd car control & is fun to watch as a display but as a sport in its own right i think its cack! other motorsport is based on quick 1/4 mile times or fast laps or beatingthe oponent but drifting i've seen on sky in america n japan seems to be scored on the style of driving etc etc thats just gay! if there is other elements to drifting fair enough! but i don't think its a Sport! i enjoy doing it myself on my own on a late night on a damp road & nobody but the industrial estate security is my audiance (him waving & telling me to stop haha haha) i only done it to learn how to control a rwd car if the worst happened!!! if ppl were about i did'nt bother! i have know rwd car now so cant curse word!

i think its bloody impressive how they can control some of the drifts they get going, but i don't really see it as properly serious, more of a curse word about, round corners it seems fun but on the straights seems a bit pointless. i know id like to be able to do it to scare some people and have a laugh but its not really a proper motorsport is it

points are scored based on speed and angle.
its about getting as close to the edge as possible without falling off the cliff.
it is as much a valid sport as figure skating in my eyes; it requires effort and talent and has a structured system by which a winner is declared.

i have to agree; its far from a serious motorsport in my eyes; its good to watch now and again, the cars are cool; but i don't think i could watch lap after lap of guys doing it. i would like to go to an event to look around the paddock, and have a watch; but i don't think i could ever become a proper drift junkie; and having watched the 'demos' at some of the big santa pod events in the big cage (behind the pie shop and theme park) i can say i get bored of it pretty quickly. how do they determind who wins? do you have a panel of judges like ice skateing? despite not taking it seriously; i would love a go at it! i think the kitten needs more power first, but i will certainly be giving it a pop when i get enough poke; i even already know of a reliant axle with a welded diff that i might be able to borrow.

reading between the lines on that ten tenths forum, it seems that most of the racers have their panties in a bunch cos you don't have to blow huge amounts of cash on your car to be competitive at drifiting, like they have to to be competative in thier respective race classes. they're basically saying 'youve not spent enough on your car for it to be a real racecar'
it also seems they think the only people interested in drifting are 17 and driving mommys car. funny, from what ive seen all the competitors are about 30 and building thier own specific drifting cars.

I think its cool but its not a real motorsport as there is no outright winner i.e the person who wins has won because of the opinion of somebody else no by crossing a finishing line first.

This is the best statement I've seen on it : "Drifting is motorsport. It involves cars, it involves racetracks, and it involves a winner. Therefore it is motorsport. What is NOT, is motor RACING."

Very irresponsible of me I know but I just love seeing it done really well on public roads. That video on YouTube of the RX7 doing the long drifts round corners with oncoming traffic in the other lane demonstrates a superb skill, and massive bravery.
Of course the driving in Initial D (the film) is great, and the legend of drifting is that is came from the mountain roads. For me it is typical of the Japanese culture of self contemplation, quiet focus and zen like meditation. Buddhism meets Tai Chi.
When you see it done on the track with those screaming Japanese judges it loses its contemplative charm. Drifting is Zen!

Seems to be too much elitism going on, and whats the issue they have with folks wearing baseball caps and hoodies? Drifitng does seem to be a really accessable sport, which is maybe why some 'purists' don't like it. Would love to have a go. On the other hand, a couple of weeks ago, i got the classic "Your cars curse word mate" line off a lad with driftworks sticker on his bimmer

would love to try but wouldnt want to appear to be jumping on that already massively over loaded bandwagon.
But the people who says its not a motorsport cos they are going sideways and not going round the circuit quickly; since when has that been a requirement of sport? the sport is surely determined by the winner doing whatever it is they have to do to win, so theres no requirement to be the fastest line round a track.
Also, theres remarkable skill involved I'm sure. thats where the sport is.
and - hasnt auto testing been considered a form of motorsport for years? Ah but wait, thats cos it was around when the flat cap brigade were doing it in their minis and stuff. I don't see the difference frankly.
Like hotwire said pretty well, its not motor racing, but its not intended to be is it?
its the motoring equiv. of skateboards and BMXs. but then you're gonna tell me extreme sports aren't sports either...
