I see what you mean now Chas - thanks for the in-depth explanation. I've just done my thermostat today and noticed the bypass foot. Nice having warm heaters isn't it?! Not a problem, I am glad that I did not bore you! Warm heater? I love 'em! With my car having the climate control it made things interesting with the heater (basically having the heater osicallate between hot and cold and seeing the temperature needle wave above near the blue!). Now that the car stays warm that is no longer an issue .

Not much to update here!
The car was treated to another oil change (it has quietened down the tappets thankfully) as well as a fuel filter change. It was not a terrible starter before (quite good in fact) but it has made the car start better (barely a few turns from cold and it is alive) in addition to it feel a little perkier again! Placebo or coincidence with the cold weather?

What oil did you use? Mine has a noisy lifter or two. The oil change helped but it's still there intermittently. I stuck 10w40 semi-synth in mine although I'm wondering whether a 5w or even 0w oil would help matters more. It just seemed a bit posh for a 15 year old car with 140k on the clock... The manual says all sorts can be used (the M50 even lists 20w50 in hotter climates!!) and reading threads on the internet about M52s and oils is just infuriating as they always descend into arguments.
Also, did you say you opened up the heater pipes to get the air out the cooling system? I reckon I still have air in there despite bleeding it thoroughly...

I threw in 10W40. Basically from what I can gather, BMW said that 10W40 was fine for our climates before they went to the longer life services (on 10W40 the change intervals were around 7,500 miles. The longer life cars ran 5W30. I was temptwd to throw in 5W30 in the hope that the engine may hopefully clean out a little quicker, but I shall be sticking to a quicker than normal service regime (with regards to the oil) for the next few changes . IMO mileage doesn't come into it: The V6 Mondeo I gave away still runs on 5W30 and that is now going beyond 260,000 miles . Admitedly I have rigourously adhered to the servicing on that car as well. I did indeed open up the heater pipes. Despite bleeding the system to how BMW say (as well as people saying that BMW would never design a system that was awkward to bleed) I had cold air coming out of the vents, despite attempting to bleed it alot! To add insult to injury I had the heaters set to full temp with the fan control set to halfway (this is meant to be done ao as to open up some valves in the HVAC system). T he engine never overheated and it got to temperature fine and stayed there. Upon removing the central heating pipe (mine has 3 pipes going to the heater) some air came out and the heater is now lovely . This will sound silly but I noticed on all of my Peugeots that the air almost always gathered at the heater matrix (which is where Peugeot provide a heater matrix screw very handily) . Small wonder than Ford always mounted their matrices low so as to allow for self bleeding to occur . EDIT: I knew I forgot something! On both the thermostat I removed and the one I put back in they had an arrow on the top of them pointing towards where the top of the thermostat should sit to assist bleeding the car. Did yours come with this?

The thermostat I took out had an arrow, but it was pointed at about the 8 o'clock position, which I figured couldn't be right, but seeing as my new (non-OEM) thermostat didn't have any arrows I just popped it in.
I'm just going to keep an eye on my temp and coolant level for a while. My blowers are fairly warm but I'm thinking they should be more fierce than they are... maybe not though! My blower resistor pack has gone so the blowers only work on maximum, which is complicating things a bit.

I have been, especially with it gaining 3k in my ownership.
However, I have now moved it on. Owning one car again (and one that I probably will not use for another month!) is interesting to say the least.
