v5 log book vw kit or special . . Do I ask

I'm looking at doing a kit . .

Most of you may have been thinking about it at some time ..

So from what I can tell

If I use the points system to keep my reg I will need to use

Engine
gearbox box
steering
front axles - beam
rear axles etc

All I make new is the body and chassis which can not be second hand .

Can the parts used be modified?

I will need to move the steering to a more central position. ..

Has any one had any dealing with kits

Will I get a v5 with special on it or keep vw beetle

Does anybody have a vw v5 that has special as the body type ?

I had a GP style beach buggy years back, the V5 stated the make as a 'Volkswagen' and the model as a 'Tourer' (?) I think to retain the reg plate you ideally need to be using the floor pan (chassis) as well as this carries the VIN number (centre tunnel by the rear seat). Either way it'll need an SVA after you've built it, what are you planning on building?

If you wish to keep your Reg and avoid an IVA test, 5 point of the required 8 MUST come from the original, unmodified chassis/monocoque that the car had FROM REGISTRATION. You cannot include a new chassis or monocoque UNLESS it is a Heritage shell, which doesn't apply as you say its a VW.

SVA Test doesn't exist anymore, and if the original backbone chassis is used as well as parts to keep the original ID under the 8-points scheme, nothing is required outside of an MOT.

Sorry, but no.

If you're building a sandrail, it'll have to go through an IVA and be issued with a Q-plate.

Where it say "New and unmodified - direct from the manufacturer", it means a replacement back bone chassis from VW itself. It cannot be a completely different chassis from a completely different manufacturer, as the onus on using a 'new' replacement is that it conforms to the same Type Approval as the original.

there is one fairly odd loophole where if it is a 'single donor vehicle', ie.e all major components from one car EXCEPT the chassis, it can keep the original ID of the donor car, BUT, it still has to go through IVA. this is how a lot of robin hood kit cars and the like are still on the original plate and not a Q.

The full VW chassis including floorpans, and not just the backbone, has to be used.

Nope, that's under the Kit Converted Vehicle rules, rather than the 8-point Radically Altered Vehicle rules, and you still don't retain the original ID of the donor vehicle unless you use the original unaltered chassis or monocoque.

However you CAN apply for an age-related plate upon passing the BIVA, if you use a new chassis from a recognised manufacturer. It won't be the original ID though, that disappears with the old chassis/shell.

Okay so I may as well use parts I have and not buy a complete car ... but to what age would the plate be . . Would it be engine related ?

Download a copy of the BIVA manual first as you will probably find some of the parts you already have won't be suitable. Things like brakes must be auto adjust which Beetle items don't comply.

Very true. I guess you could get away with using a front disc upgrade though? Was there ever a self-adjusting front drum set-up?

It only applies if you use parts from one single donor vehicle, so the age of that vehicle would be used to determine the age-related plate. If you just use a mish-mash of part, then you're back to a Q-plate.

You can get wide 5 disc brake conversions. Not cheap though.

More digging it would seem your right I can't use alk vw parts and keep the number . .bit of a bummer .

easiest way is to find a old vw based kit car that's had the documents changed to special already and used that start to build my body onto

So does any one have a old kit or special bodied rep for sale ?

Why not just build to the rules instead of trying to find a way round them ?

Have you seen the size of the book or the price for getting a car vin stamp etc etc .

Some of the rules regarding what you can and can't do to kits are a bit weird but any sort of chassis mod may cause the vehicle to require an IVA. It really depends on what you are using as a base/donor and who you get to do the first MOT after the rebuild.
I know the old UVA sand rails are poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo but it may be worth waiting until one comes up for sale, there were plenty made, providing that was the sort of thing you were after.
The thing to watch out for are chassis mods as even a suspension mounting bracket like a 5 link rear to replace leaf springs can be cause for the IVA to be required. Don't bend the rules. I know the IVA is a pain in the backside to complete but it's not impossible.
A lot of todays kits are 'rebodies' using the same base chassis to avoid requiring an IVA, not something you can really do with a sand rail style vehicle.
