Yep I was reading about this in classic car weekly, they where moaning on about the harm old cars do to the environment. The damage old cars do to the environment is negligible compared to the amount of toxics produced in the production of new cars. I guess if it goes through then we can wave could bye to a lot more useable old cars, in the last scrappage scheme they ended up scrapping around 362,000 old cars. It saddens me personally.

Precisely! I've read elsewhere about retrofitting filters to help ease the problem. I'd personally be more in favour of that if environmental issues are the actual motivation behind another potential scrappage scheme. Now that you've mentioned the numbers from the last scheme, I might as well throw in this too. It's just about French cars, but it makes for bad bedtime stories. timewarptuesday.wordpress.com/2014/10/01/scrappage-scandal-crushed-french-classics/

Ultra low emmision zone for central london in 2020 only zero emision vehicles or pay a fee Plus an extra £10 I believe for diesels, over petrols. Guess I won't be driving into London during the week from 2020

Its 24/7 and ALL vehicles no exceptions for weekends or classics planned. Rather than £10 I think its more likely to be closer to the £100 to £200 per day that older commercials have to pay to go into the Low Emision Zone

The flip side of running vehicles that cost nothing to tax or MoT, I guess - let's hope that sense prevails outside Central London though as I've heard worrying things about trials in the sticks too...

On a selfish point, my mk1 mx5 will appreciate when people who haven't got a clue start scrapping them to get something new.

Such a pointless and misguided scheme. Subsidise the destruction of a small minority of existing economical cars in favour of encouraging the wasteful production of even more new cars!
I'd like to see a study on the actual number of older diesel cars in central London, and also how the emissions from them compare to what comes from diesel powered buses, taxis and trains!

I don't get the thinking behind low-emissions 'zones' as I'm just a stupid member of the public...!!!
The reason I don't understand it is that the country we live in is a tad bigger than London and just because you cannot use your car in London it doesn't mean that those horrible 'killers' won't exit your exhaust if you cruise around Surrey or anywhere else for that matter...?! To me that means pollution will still be in England...?!
Anyhow, what do I know...?!?!?!
With regards to the scrappage scheme I think it's absurd that a government that scraps MOT's on older cars and continues the rolling (40 years) tax free scheme will then throw all that out of the window by urging people to destroy these cars so they can get a semi-bland box on wheels that only farts perfume...!!!
Again, what do I know...?!?!?!
Well, I know that as long as this forum is here and there are people like us at least a few wonderful old cars will remain...!!!
Long live classic motors...!!!

What is happening to this forum?
This *possible* scheme - if you read the link - is for diesels.
If you have a diesel MX5 then consider my hat well and truly doffed.
Would be great if we could put as much effort into the awesome car threads BTW...

Whilst I can never condone the wanton destruction of perfectly serviceable older cars for the sake of some hyped up bull about enviromental impact, it wouldn't be quite so bad if the modern equivalant they expect us to rush out to buy were in any way inspiring to drive or look at!!

Must seriously plan on getting the SpridJET road registered then. Presumably the London pen pushers will not add kerosene to the list of banned automotive propellants
