Hi everyone, I´ve been reading RR Forum for few years now and decided register now to make my own project topic after getting my Mk1 back (More of that later). You guys have amazing rides here and I must admit that cars here have made a huge impact to me. First my Retroride: (More of that later) 1983 Golf Mk1 GTI 1.8

Well back to the mk1: I´ve always been into VWs and Porsches but newer were brave enough to buy a hobby car and all the cars before the Mk1 have been just daily rides. But at the end of the 2012, almost exact 2 years ago there was some changes in my personal life and I decided, whatta hell- you only live at once and decided to find something older and ineresting. (Errr... now I seem to have 2 weekend cars, so call that progress) Mk1 GTI is quite rare in Finland. Being over 30 years old now the GTIs are hard to find here. So I put my eyes on used car ads in Sweden, where the selection is better than here. After following swedish blocket.se for a few months, there it was: en äkta Golf GTI till salu, a original Golf GTI for sale. Around 314000km behind it. After looking the ad continuously for few days ad I gave the seller Pontus a call. The car was located in Swedish Lapland which gave good wipes, they do not use salt there very much and distances are long, so all cars are "marathon runners" in Lapland. I asked several questions from the seller, but the seller couldn´t say anything about it´s history. It sat with 15" ATS Cup wheels and coilevers which the current owner had installed. Only information I got was that it was painted few years ago and the paint is not perfect, but not either and that there was some surface rust under the trunk floor. Having got that information I decided to book flights from Helsinki to Stockholm and till Umeå. The car was located in small town called Nörsjö, around 800km north from Stockholm.

We decided to pick up the GTI on january 2013 and while I was waiting that I investigated what information I could find of my GTI. First I checked the information from Swedish Transportstyrelsen: Fordonsidentifikation Registreringsnummer: LKZ887 Fabrikat: VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI Färg: SVART Fordonsslag: PB Fordonsår: 1983 Fordonsslagsklass: I Chassinummer: ZZZ17ZDW410632 Typgodkännandenummer: Typgodkännandedatum: Senaste EU-regbevis del 1: 2011-06-08 Senaste EU-regbevis del 2: 2011-06-08 Handelsbeteckning: Upplysningar: Fordonsdata Fordonsstatus: I trafik (1991-07-05) Tillfällig registrering: Nej Privatimport: Nej Antal ägare: 14 Yrkesmässig trafik: Nej Fordonet tillverkat: Producentansvarig: I trafik första gången i Sverige: 1983-03-28 I trafik första gången i utlandet: It was original GTI as it was supposed to be! Registered 28th march 1983. And "only" 14 owners had enjoyed this legendary hot hatch before me. Also I took a look the garaget.org, swedish site for car enthusiasts and guess what I found. Some previous owner had uploaded pictures from the car on 2009 !! (What a find) It looked like the GTI had "new" paint on back then already. Oh how I waited the first january weekend to come 2 years ago......... Please note also, that it seem to have been daily on 2009 when these pics were taken sitting with 13" winter tyres, towing hook and that retro Kamei winter cover on the bonnet.

Finally that long awaited weekend came in january 2013. After nearly missing the connecting flight from Stockholm to Umeå, we arrived to the northern Sweden. We took our rental Corolla from local AVIS and and took a night sleep there before heading further north to Norsjö next morning. My mate Petri hop behind the steering wheel of the Corolla as we headed the north.

We arrived to Norsjö and meet Pontus and he´s dad Tove who owned the Golf. After chatting a while we soon found out that both father and son were car guys, Tove had build hot rods and now owned a restored Volvo PV. (What else, we were in Sweden after all !) GTI was stored through the winter mated with the Volvo. Pontus suggested on the phone that we would bring a trailer with us and tow the GTI back home to Finland. To save some time we decided to drive GTI home after Pontus kindly changed the 13" winter tyres on and checked the coolant. And there it was: The Golf was far better than I thought ! OK, the paint was only average and the driver´s seat had worn from the usual places, but the best part of it. And yes it was rust free, the doors and sills were OK and the Tove and Pontus assured that there wasn´t going to be any surprises under the GTI arch plastic trims. We got bunch of spare parts with it, 15" ATSs on the first pic, those 14" BBS on 2009 pics, that Kamei front spoiler and cardboard box of miscellaneous stuff. We thank the sellers, loaded two set of wheels and everything else into GTI and started the road trip back to Helsinki !

The 700km trip home started like a dream, it seemed all the 112 horses were still there and running fast under the shiny bonnet. I drove first 50km in a bliss as fast as I could, that experience was mind blowing. I had owned Porsches in the past, but this was something different- a rally car with plates. What a car. The studded tyre bit like a h*ll and I did found myself doing 120-140km/h in every straight on the icy road -10´c. That was epic ride.....

We returned Corolla to Umeå and took the ferry back to Finland. While waiting the ferry I spotted there´s something strange going on with the rear fog lights. They cannot switched off and also the oil pressure warning light did shine on the dash. But again Tove and Pontus assured that wasn´t anything to worry about as they had driven the Golf already a year with the light shining. I did definetely hope that they were telling the truth as we still had 550km to home..... Also we did familiarize with the GTI´s convenient 4 key system. Must get new keys and new locks..... Finally we were home without ANY problems, (alive and without any speeding tickets) ! Quite a achievement for a 30 year old car, full winter and and from -10´c to -15´c outside. We drove home in serious speed on icy roads. The best memory was overtaking a 4Motion 3.6 Passat 3C in the middle of the night doing 120km/h- those tyres really bite !

Back home I started to go through what´ve bought. That Kamei scoop was bit ugly and there was leakage from the headlight washer... Also the back bumper was changed to chrome early spec one, which was bit curved and plastidipped. That must be changed. Also the exhaust back box was loud Simons one welded on Walker front part. Interior was tidy: Everything original inside except the aftermarket stereo and ruined centre console without GTi extra gauges. Original 4 -spoke steering wheel ! Driver seat´s bolster was worn, co-driver´s seat and rear seat were quite good ! And yes, some other DIY Hifi installer had made holes for the speakers..... New door panels needed ! Same installer had prefered 6x9 sound more than intact shelf on the back. (Loudspeakers already removed in this picture)

First I had the GTI MOTd to get it registered to Finland and to get a to-do-list. Well, it did not pass the MOT. The previous owner had MOTd it in just few months back Sweden, I don´t know how. The list was expected but nothing too serious: - Both tie rod ends were worn (Yep, the steering felt bit loose) - Steering rack boots were broken - One rust hole on the floor, otherwise solid !! - The rear fog lights were on all the time (I knew that...) - Headlight washers did not work (They will have to work in Finland, if they are installed) - One indicator bulb broken So it was ride home to start ordering parts.

First I changed the wobbly early-spec rear bumper. New repro plastic one one and it looked "right" after the swap. Old vs new New bumper on, looks better ! Spot also the "1800" badge under the GTI- badge. Extra sign only in Swedish market? While installing the bumper I spotted something strange in the left corner: Bad crash repair on the left corner, right side looked OK. The left is "custom made" to fit to the corner....would´ve it been easier to fix the rear end properly first? Right side on reference: Well, that shall do for now. No rust and paint is OK.

Next I opened the glove box and got somemore history: Enormous amount of recipts original manual and service book there ! According the documents the GTI had lived in the north since day one, yes ! - 1983-1992 VW dealer full service book until 150000km - 1992-1994 No documents - 1994-2007 Recipts from all the services, repairs and MOTs - 2008-2010 Some random recipts - 2011-1/2013 Owner before me It seemed GTI had been taken care in the past !

Some new and used parts arrived: New trim to the dash (old one was broken) I have prefered using OEM parts always when they are available and UPS has brought many packages from Volkswagen Classic Part Center... New parcel shelve came from VWHeritage UK, old trunk side plastic panels still there. It seemed there´s some differences between different model years. I guess the VWHeritage retro shelf is "early" one, but changed the side panels later. Miscellaneous parts...... I <3 my VISA Shopping list to the front, now everything is new at the front. The GTI is on relatively new TA-Technix coilovers and so springs and shocks were left alone. 2x 171411333A Stabilizator clamp VW 2x 171411313 Stabilizator bush VW 2x 171411314A Stabilizator bush, outer 2x N10207701 Clip steering boot VW 2x 357422839 Clip steering boot VW 4x N0221464 Nut VW 2x 171411337 Stabilizator clamp VW 2x 021-VW51 Front wishbones (171407153D) 2x 802-1878 Wishbone bush (171407181A) 2x 802-3876 Wishbone bush rear (171407182D) 2x 171407365FG Ball joint Meyle (171407365F) 2x 171412329A Front shock absorber upper mount Meyle 2x 171419804 Tie rod ends Meyle

It was time to rip some useless stuff off. Wiring for the driving light was still there, no fuse and uncovered connections. I hope the last owner had fire insurance. Installed new battery also back then. Over 10m of wiring was ripped off..... and I said goodbye to the Kamei scoop also. One picture without the scoop....

Started to search new wheels on february 2013 And found a set from Ebay: Fresh refurbished BBS RSs 7x15" ET 25 I ordered also a set of red Japan BBS caps for the wheels. Here´s a picture wheels waiting for the tyres: I sold the 15" ATSs and 14" BBSs and kept the 13" Exip wheels with winter tyres. To be continued. I´ll continue writing during the upcoming days......

Next it was time to choose the tyres: I went for 165/45/15 Nankangs, which streched nicely to the 7 inch rims. (And later I realised those Gangkangs ruined the handling....)And then some height adjusting.... Repro GTI stripes to the side.... And there we were! (March 2013)

That is one sweet looking VW! It is always great to see the history behind the car. I would have preferred a little more tyre and a touch more sidewall, but we do all like different things . It certainly seems to have had alot of attention lavished over it!

Good write up.
Like the GTi, but love the Cayman S.
Went on eBay after reading this to have a look at Techart stuff and it seems your wheels are very tasteful compared with some of the stuff they do, eg. the Cayenne Magnum.
