Have a 1998 Rover 820 badged 800 and want to fit a sport dished leather rim steering wheel. Cannot source a wheel boss kit for that model but got me wondering if any other Rover or otherwise use the same steering column and have same spline compatibility. Long shot but so much tech information from forum members might throw up an alternative ? Thanks

if that boss kit will fit my 1998 820 ill be very happy horn i would reroute to a push button switch , rewire throughout to newer type klaxon horn and srs light id bypass with a resistor that appears to solve the problem from what ive read all after next mot i might add but thanks for pointing me in right direction

drop down menu says 1991 onwards so assume same fitting onwards to mine a 98 model never seen a modified 800 or 820 forums ive visited seem full of must be standard anoraks cos when i mentioned modifying the reply was stuffy and full of amazement. Maybe the 800 forums are really not for me and my wayward thinking but a modded 800 will be rare i suppose

That is probably because removing the original steering wheel complete with air bag constitutes a major modification in the eyes of an insurance company as you have compromised a major safety system on the car. If you don't inform them it is guaranteed that they will not pay out in the case of a crash that causes personal injury (or possibly any crash for that matter). If you do inform them I suspect you will be in line for rather a large hike in premium as one of the largest expenses for an insurer is a personal injury claim and increasing the likelyhood of an injury being sustained in an accident is significantly increasing the insurance risk. Bring back the good old days when you could just buy a steering wheel at a custom car show and fit it without fear of reprecussions!!

Well put that way it don't sound such a viable idea but your right good old pre air bag days things were more simple

And You are going on the assumption that the SRS system in a car that old would actually deploy.. The manufacturer recommends pyrotechnics replacement every 8-14 years. I can promise that has never been done..

Quite simply its not worth the risk.

I wouldn't personally trust a 15 year old airbag more than I would a a good quality steering wheel boss collapsing and a seat belt. But yea, that isn't really a deal for insurance to worry about.

I now have everything I need to do a diagnosis and reset on my 20 year old SRS system, so plan at the moment is to stick with the Rover steering wheel and fix the SRS so I can get it MOT'd

You don't need to refit the air bag for the mot. It is only tested if present, if it is removed and the lamp isn't on, it's a pass. Why anyone would go through the hassle of swapping each year defeats me..
