Hi, I have been reading the forum for a while now and thought I would create a thread for the build of my new garage to log my progress if anyone is interested. Once finished it will house my hill climb 205 GTi and my crb1000rr. I have just received planning and had a few days off work this week so site clearance has started, I have had to dig out a few trees already and removed a metal shed. Construction wise it will be timber frames to keep costs down and make it easier to go up.

Cool. Big project, but exciting as it means a lot to be able to properly house your toys.

That forum looks awesome, some very nice garages on there. I intend to insulate and board the interior and am considering some roof lights as well to make it as light as possible.
This one will be very modest compared to some of those, its roughly 7m x 4m. That is the largest the planning department would let me have, even though there is a fair bit more land than that.
It will be nice to get my toys in a decent space. I have renovated the whole house to keep the wife happy and now this is for me. It currently has a small single garage but this will eventually be converted as it is integral.
I am hoping to have the structure up and watertight by March time as I can't work evening at the moment due to light.
I will update as I go.

Done a couple hours of digging today and started the foundation trenches. The garage will be on the right of the house as shown, set back 1 meter from the front wall. I reacon I have about 20 tonnes of soil to dig out, seems a shame to skip it but there is way too much to do anything with.

A little bit of progress since the last post, footings are now all dug and filled and the dwarf wall is going up. I am hoping to start the framework next weekend. I have managed to give away all of my soil and about 7 dumpy bags of rubble for free so saving loads on money to spend on new gadgets inside the garage.

I'm presuming you have building regs?

I'm presuming you have building regs? This is only from memory but I thought building regs were only required if over 300sqft? If I'm right then 4m x 7m = about 295sqft?

1st post says planning acquired, afaik building regs and planning are different things, planning gives you permission, regs are the codes you carry out the works to

It depends on the local council - mine stated that a garage over 30m required building regs. As such, 7x4 is within what's permitted without them.

I do love a good garage build - hope you make quicker progress than I have with mine! My biggest single mistake was moving stuff in before it was properly finished - I now just use it 'as is' and haven't yet got round to finishing all the 'little' bits.... I admit I've not looked at planning or building regs for about 6 or 7 years, since I was planning my garage so my advice could well be outdated! I'm just happy that I didn't need planning permission for my monster

You will need building regs for almost anything you do over 15 sqm. FWIW those foundations don't look deep enough normally 1 meter deep for almost anything. look for building regs info on line. Building a detached garage of less than 30 square metres floor area would not normally need building regulations approval if: the floor area of the detached garage is less than 15 square metres. the floor area of the garage is between 15 square metres and 30 square metres, provided the garage is at least one metre from any boundary, or it is constructed from substantially non-combustible materials. www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/outbuildings/Hope this helps!
