I've bought a jaguar which has a tape player/radio and did have a CD multi changer in the boot. The previous owner removed the multi changer as it was faulty. I've got a nice kenwood header unit which has cd, radio and ipod so I thought rather than buying a new multi changer, I'll remove the tape player and fit my kenwood header. I thought this would have been a straightforward swap, but things were made very difficult as the car has a parrot Bluetooth kit fitted. I have never seen so many wires in my life, see the picture below. I removed all the trim and got tape player out. I bought a proper wiring loom kit and plugged in all the wires, tested the system, cd header and Bluetooth were all working fine. I then went to refit the front panel, which has the clock, heater system and header unit all the one panel. Due to the ridiculous amount of wiring I could only get the header half in before it jammed solid. 2 full afternoons were spent with trial and error trying to get the the wiring moved into a position which would let the header slide back. After removing the trim under the steering wheel, I could finally pull the loom into the corner and after hours of trying, the CD player finally clicked into place. I put the trim back together and fired up the car, the Bluetooth and header were showing no signs of life.
Tonight I came home and plugged the jaguar tape player in, again this is not lighting up. I decided to remove the Bluetooth, as one the wiring is everywhere, and two I don't need it. I then discovered that all the blue tooth wiring has been twisted together and taped over. After removing all the blue tooth and wiring, I again tried to use the jaguar tape deck and still no luck. I tested to make sure it was earthing properly, all ok, the positive wire was getting power with ignition, also ok. I then checked the permanent live feed and this is not showing any volts. I got a tiny bit of wire and ran a bridge from the positive wire to the permanent wire and tried again, this time everything worked ok.
So, questions, how can the permanent positive feed just die like that? Also what's the best way to fix this? The only thing I can think of, is to put a wire to the battery and run it all the way through the car and solder it to the permanent positive connection. The permanent positive wire goes into the loom by the gear knob and away into the car, so would be a nightmare to trace and follow. I should add the loom has been shoved and pulled back and forth quite hard over the last 2 afternoons.
