Good news! Ebay seller sorted me with an almost direct replacement for the punctured tyre for free and included fitting as well, (Its a Pirelli Cinturato rather than a P zero but I don't really care ) So its taken about 4 months to go from this to this Started on one of the rears, here you can see the lowering springs, new bump stops and the new handbrake cable. Not very interesting admittedly but it cost enough to get them fitted so look at them! And thats about where the good news ended.. Usually I've blamed the Saab for many misfortunes but this time I must take the blame I made an offset miscalculation thinking that the standard wheels were et35 rather than the et45 they actually are.. So trying to fit the wider et42 'BBS'' with 20mm spacers is going to result in some clearance issues. On the rear I might be able to get away with a arch roll but the fronts aren't going to look right, even if I roll the arches and remove the arch liners And of course, fitting the wheels without the spacers but with the long bolts results in the wheel binding on the bits inside the drum-in-hat handbrake. So this is as far as I got, some shots of a wheel on the car but still on the jack Egg on face, shorter wobble bolts ordered, wheels WILL finally get fitted!

Right. Shorter wobble bolts arrived today and I wasted no time in putting them to good use Everything went on with no issues And the wheels suit the car nicely in my opinion But of course nothing is straight forward with the Saab so there were a couple of issues naturally.. First off is this torn driveshaft boot Which is irritating, currently weighing up whether I can be bothered to sort it myself or to pay someone else to do it.. Then theres this.. A hole which a little bit of poking made bigger, need to work out how structural or not this panel is then work out what to do with it Bloody car!

I agree with you, the wheels really do suit it, and I feel your pain of constantly finding niggly faults when doing other jobs on your car.

That looks ace! A 10mm spacer on the back and it would be perfect.

Looks like he might be able to fit a 15 or 20mm there maybe, depending on arch clearance. Looking good!

Cheers guys!
I've got some 20mm spacers but I'm not sure if they'd be too much for the back, theres quite a big lip on the rear arches which needs rolling up
I also need to put some 5mm or so spacers on the front as I've got about a hairs width of axial clearance to the brake calipers haha
Might have a play with spacers at the weekend after I've worked out what to do about the new issues..

I must admit that I was beginning to believe these wheels were a figment of a fevered imagination but no. On and looking pretty damn fine! Shame about the niggles.

Took some time out today to try some spacers on, the rear was too tucked and the front needed a bit more clearance from the brake calipers I already had the 20mm's for the rear and got some 5mm spacers for the front Rear went from this To this A definite improvement I would say and I'm fairly sure I shouldn't have arch clearance issues, though we'll see how it goes after a drive or two. I'm also hoping to get the tracking sorted this week as well as it needs doing! I've also picked up a second hand back box I've already made a start on polishing the tip (ooerr) as it was covered in road tar and rubbish, no before pics but this is how its looking now Should look and sound good when fitted, and not before too long either as the current back box has seen better days!

Well even after only just getting the wheels fitted, the Saab is up for sale. It's finally beaten me! A reality check has made me realise that too many things keep popping up on this which is taking my time and money away from the main focus of doing up the MG so its gotta go as much as I'm loathe to sell it with outstanding issues :/

There is no shame in admitting a car has beaten you . If I am honest it is good to refocus one's attention a car that deserves it .

I ended up doing this. I probably was called a timewaster by many sellers TBH but I really did want a car that would present me with minimal hassle. However, what I saw as faults on cars most probably would have lived with!

just read your thread adam and really enjoyed it such a pity your thinking of giving up on it as its such a nice car and youve put so much time and effort into it been there myself especially when you have a few motors as you tend to spent your hard earned on the runabout rather than the project you really want doing so maybe your right to take a hard line although your gonna pass a good car on to someone lucky enough to purchase it! anyway good luck and enjoyed your hard work! be interested to see your next runabout and how it evolves haha remember its just a "daily" cheers paul

adam just as an afterthought have a read of seths epic oxford thread its awesome only read through half of it so far but he gives you the highs and lows of owning and working on old motors that we as enthusiasts go through - its very inspiring and may make you want to keep your saab certainly gave me a boost!

ChasR I'm definitely guilty of looking past many minor faults when buying cars, for the next one I need to be tougher! waylander Thank you Yeah it is a shame to have to give up on it but the trend seems to be that as soon as something gets fixed, something else breaks so it would be a never ending battle! For my MG as my long term project car I don't mind this (I came pretty close to selling it at one point!) but for a daily its a bit trying Its a shame because I've pretty much got it looking a way that I like and after taking off the backbox today (fitting the sporty one but driving without for a couple of days) I've realised that it can sound quite cool too! I don't mind spending money on a daily if its going towards improving it, its the stuff like the clutch, the timing chain, bulkhead welding which I hadn't planned for and ate up a considerable amount of cash! But this is what can happen with a car in this sort of age and price bracket, you get a few owners who don't spend much on the car and everything goes wrong at once! Hopefully I've gone some way to turning this around now, and after sorting a few cosmetic issues, I'm sure the next owner will have a really nice looking and performing car The 'Just a daily' philosophy is one that I'm pretty bad at following XD And yeah I've got Seth's thread bookmarked, I'm not sure I've read all of it but its certainly an epic! My MGB thread will probably become a bit of an epic by the time I have it back on the road haha!

Its only taken from the 23rd October to now.... But the Saab is finally gone. Bit of a sad end as after all my efforts to keep it going, its off up to Cumbria to be broken to help revive a flooded Viggen but at least its going to be useful to someone So after almost exactly a year and 11,000 miles, I can safely say that financially I should have sold this wayy back when I first heard the cam chain rattling (in fact I should have heard that when I went to view it and just walked away..). Its taken quite a lot of cash and time to keep it going over the year but its been a pretty trusty car to get me around the country. It was also a bit of a laugh to drive with its ridiculous torque steer and hopeless understeer while managing to average 28mpg over the time I've had it which isn't too bad (when you compare it to the other cars I've had anyway...) Anyway, I'm glad its gone, whats next?
