I am considering spraying a car in my garage using 2K. I know of the health risks associated with the paint. But what are peoples thoughts on doing a one off spray job in a clean, well ventilated double garage.
I don't have access to an airfed mask, but would buy the best full face cartridge one I could afford and obviously sperm suit and gloves, etc. My thoughts are, I understand the trade needing top quality protection, as they are doing it day in day out. But surely a one off job wouldn't kill me........would it !!!! Just curious to hear other peoples thoughts and experiences. Discounting the neighbours, pets, children, local councils, the Law, etc, etc....I know all that curse word is bad !!!

Hire an extractor fan for sure, one time no it won't kill you, get a 3m 2k mask, goggles and a spray suit and wear latex gloves.

When buying a face mask there are different types some only filter out dust some filter paint particals..just double check wich one you get.. as for painting in the garage wet the floor around your car it will keep the dust down...aslong as the garage is well ventilated there shouldn't be any issues.. If you start to feel light headed when painting then the mask isn't sealing properly...need to re adjust...also get a water trap on your airline... try and find a decent car paint supplier local to you.. around by me its hicklys.or Bristol it's avon auto colours..They only do car body shop supplies they will do everything you need.. avoid halfrauds at all costs all the best ..

Another brain fart of mine !!!
What about using water based paint. Is it much more difficult to use and finish ?

I don't see the benift of water based, you still need to apply a 2k lacquer over it, so the risks are about the same.

Thanks for the advice 86Corolla. I already use a very good local paint supplier and don't worry, I wouldn't buy the stuff from Halfrauds !! LOL.
I have heard of people wetting the area around the car, but I am not such a fan of that idea, since you are introducing moisture into the air in the immediate vicinity of the paint. I will lay down some fresh tough visquin type stuff used for damp proofing to alleviate the dust and some masking polythene overhead to try and stop anything dropping down. Fine dust particles can be polished out, but moisture can be a bit more problematic. I think also a good idea to do the job on a wind free, dry day.

Don't forget your neighbors, you may be nice and snug in your PPE. but remember, you are spreading carcenogenic and highly flammable vapours around, also they may not appreciate spray dust on their car/laundry etc. Sorry for sounding like a moaning Minnie, but have been on the receiving end of enthusiastic diy Ttfn Glenn

I will go round and offer them a free respirator for the day !!! Just joking. Thanks mate. I was really just considering the H&S of myself in the first instance.
I doubt the neighbours would be adversely affected, by breathing in the fumes after it had travelled 50ft across mine and their garden in the open air, although I do see your point and they may not be too impressed if I don't let them know before hand, even the smell could be a bit much for some people.
I do get on with my neighbour and he is a bit of a petrolhead himself, so I am sure a quick word will be fine.

I've done several home jobs but now put all the time into prep and primer and pay a shop to do the top coat in a proper booth . Plenty of places will do the top coat for around £200 if you supply the paint and they do the masking if necessary but the results are worth the expense . I prepped my camper and pulled all the glass out . A local coachpainter did the lot inc paint for £500

Another thought is some places rent paint booths out same as some garages rent ramps out.. see if there is anywhere local to you that does it..well worth paying a few quid to use a booth ...

Always sprayed 2pack outdoors with a simple dust mask. It does smell very powerful (due to thinners and hardener), but it dries really quickly, and is hard enough to sand easily without overdoing it. Kinda dusty now:

You can get great results at home but paying to get it into a proper booth/ oven means your the air in the gun will be clean and dry and booth temp will be optimum for launching the colour on and getting a good gloss from the gun instead of having to flat it back to get it smooth .

Thanks again guys. Lots of good and helpful advice.
I think I will leave the final finish to a sprayshop. I have to lay down some Etch primer once the car is media blasted, which is being done at my place, so I have no choice there.
But I think I will probably do the interior, the engine bay and boot area and underside (finishing coats). I will attempt to prep the panels for paint myself (blocking and sanding), if It is too difficult, I will leave it to the pro's.
My budget has taken a hammering lately, so need to reign it in a bit !!!
What do you think a bodyshop would charge to paint a fully stripped and prepped shell just the outer panels ?
Undecided on solid or met colour yet !
Thanks again to everyone.
