Well hello RR'ers. It's been a long time since I posted anything on here. Let's call it my "I-had-a-kid-then-got-cancer" break. Y'know life stuff happens! Anyway, I'm afraid my returning post is one of a request. I drove past a local parts shop today as I always do on my route to work, but today was different! Today I noticed a wheel outside that looked interesting. I thought to myself "if that's still there on the way home I'll stop and have a looky". It was, I did. They only had the one unfortunately as it was " in the back office for years getting in the way so we finally had a clear out and decided to stick out the front to see if anyone wanted it". As it matches the PCD of my old Mk1 Cavalier I could resist a cheeky £20 for it as it look frikkin awesome to my eyes. Unknown if the offset will even fit my Cav I thought I'd just have to take a chance. Well here it is: It's 14&1/2" diameter, PCD is 4x100, 9&1/4" width. only ID marks I can find are an "AX 2" between two spokes, what looks like "13152 BT" on a moulded lug and "S3" or possibly it's "SB" on the rear mounting face. Mounting face to inside lip is just under 4". So my questions are: what is it and where can I get 3 more?! Tried searching the wheel ID threads but turned up nothing. My google foo is weak here too. Anyone fancy sharing their wisdom? Cheers all, it's nice to be back!

Is it magnesium? Looks like a old racing wheel.

From those dimensions you've taken the actual rim size looks like it is 13 x 8 1/2. I agree with stealth, most likely off a racing car of some sort.

I can't help with the wheel ID, but I'm wondered if perhaps you'd bolted it to the Cav for a pic for us to perv over? Does it look like it'd fit?
Welcome back. Sounds like you've had roller-coaster.

Guess if you can't find others to make up a set it would make a nice glass top coffee table...

Ooh, those smoor wheels are the closest yet, good shout. Mine is solid though rather than split rim effect. Could be a good lead though thanks!
I'll try and get it bolted up soon as I can to see if it it'll even fit. I suspect it may need a spacer but then I may run into arch clearance issues!
Thanks for the replies folks. How would I determine if it's magnesium? aside from setting it on fire to see how it burns! It does seem fairly light for a biggish wheel.
I also need to find a nice tyre with a bit of sidewall (preferably with white lettering on it) to fit it. It's nice to be tinkering again and thinking about mods after so long.

looking at the hub bolt seats, its probably a grp4 rally wheel, especially given the size. and it is likely to be magnesium. 4x100 would be an unusual fitment though at that age though (70s at a guess). if its not 4x108, id stick my neck out and say its gunna be 4x98, off a fiat 124 rally car. i thought is seen the little SB logo before, thought it was borriani, but i cant find it online now so i might be wrong.

To test if it's mag, clean a tiny area with a bit of emery paper.
Have a rag close to hand.
Put a drop of vinegar onto the metal, if it's mag, you'll see it start to fizz.
If it starts, wipe it immediately.
If it doesn't fizz, it's not mag.
Looks just like an old superlight wheel to me

Another possible measurement is 4x4" (4x101.6mm) which would open up more potential classic British race cars

Hi, It looks like Magnesium from the colour and probably is from the 70s, In which case I wouldn't trust it on a car because Magnesium degrades over time. That is best used as a decoration piece. Seth and Rmad are right about the size, all wheels are measured at the bead.

Those minilites look a good culprit. Sorry for the duff measuring, I'll do it properly tonight. The PCD was measure using a specific device, but it's possible it was read incorrectly, especially if it's just a couple of mm difference. I'll endeavour to get an accurate measurement for that too!
James.

If the PCD is correct, I'm wondering what car might have worn them before? 100mm, wide arches, 13" rims, intended for motorsport? My guess is that the wheels might've been on a Chevette HSR.

I would doubt if the were minilites. they normally have tech del or similar cast into them. ans the origjnal minilites would not have an Et offset stamped in them... the pcd is similar to BL. they don't look ratty enough to be magnesium... they would be very fluffy andfull of deep corrosion. does the wheel have a valve hole... I cant see one using my phone.....

It does have a valve, in the first pic it is in the 8 O/clock position. Colin

Yes it has a valve: you are all correct, width is more like 8&1/2" and diameter 13". PCD is deffo 100mm Thanks for all the replies folks, getting me right back in the mood for some spanner time! James

Don't think your method of measuring is accurate enough where there might be just small difference between sizes. Far better to at least use a straight edged ruler or better still pair of proper callipers.
