Hi there I seem to read conflicting opinions as to whether banded steel wheels are legal or not. Can anyone clarify please? Thanks

Response from VOSA regarding Banded Wheels as found in this thread: "There are no specific regulations in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended (C&U) relating to the type of work you propose. Regulation 100 of C&U does require that all parts fitted to a vehicle are not likely to cause a danger to the user of the vehicle or other road users. I have attached a copy of Regulation 100. Additionally, you will need to ensure that the wheels do not protrude from the wheel arches, or that modifications are made to the bodywork of the vehicle to ensure that the wheels do not protrude." etcetera etc.

yes they are illegal. first of they have to prove there banded. second aslong as you band them properly and get someone who is handy with a mig then they are fine... The only thing the old bill can do is do you for no insurance if you don't declare them...

yes they are LEGAL lol. Know what you meant though I think it's a bit of a grey area... aslong as the correct thickness of banding it used ie same or a little thicker than the stock wheel.. and they are welded up properly then there fine. have a look on YouTube there are loads of folk doing it

There's no grey area, they are legal to use. There is no law banning their existence. My bad stealth style.. you correct they are indeed legal..my appilogies....

Don't talk curse word, the police can only do you for no insurance if you don't have insurance. the insurer can withhold or refuse to continue cover but up to that point you are insured for road risk.

Yea but if you haven't declared modifications then your insurance is technically void anyway... your car has to as it left the factory otherwise then can refuse cover..

Insurers can't get out of 3rd party cover if you have undeclared mods, they can reclaim costs from you after a crash so its not good but you can't be done for no insurance because of it

That is my understanding of the rules too. Same as the common myth that if you have no car tax then your insurance is invalidated.

I got pulled in my brothers very modified CRX the other week and the police phoned the insurance company and asked for a list of what modifications had been declared.

I got pulled in my brothers very modified CRX the other week and the police phoned the insurance company and asked for a list of what modifications had been declared. I've had the same happen, on more than one occasion in various different modified cars. Each time the officer who has stoppd me told me if they're not declared the car is uninsured, hence them ringing my insurer to check.

Anyone know anyone whos actually been done for it then? I always think insuring modified cars is largely pointless anyway as insurance companies don't understand half the modifications. Its all just boxes ticked on their computer system so other then phoning up and saying 'everything on my car is non standard' there's always something missed. When you actually have to make a claim id be surprised if they didnt want to inspect it and screw you for having something different that they didnt have a box to tick on their computer for.

Or are they saying if they ring the insurer and check/report your non-conformance your insurance is instantly voided but they cant necessarily do you for no insurance prior to being stopped?
