failed mot on some silly things

I've failed 7 out of 10 today some "silly" some not .

Least you havent got a modern where they can fail you on beam pattern and the like..

rot and loose springs (i assume they are cut/lowered and not reseating) are not silly things.

the mot is there for everyones wellbeing including yours, although in the real world much of the test is based on the testers 'opinion'

if you object to the test result then go elsewhere - probably for the best as they obviously don't respect their customers if they fill your car with tat!

I had my car tested this week. Its failed on rust by rear seat mounting points. £360 to weld up. Seems a lot considering there wasnt even an advisory for last year and it hasnt been used that much since. Getting it back tomorrow to have a look.

Hi yes springs are cut only way springs will fall out is if ther pulled or messed with so going to put a few blobs of weld on them.



And yes it is a bit of a curse word take that they put 2 tyres in the back of my car

welding springs is probably not the best solution, potentially it may cause thenm to break after a while.

cable ties/jubilee clips/wire may be a better option. probably best to ask or search the forum for others opinons/fixes as i have very little (recent) experience of cut/short springs and previously i didn't know any better



edit to add : apart from being pro-mot (when done properly), I'm not trying to sound off about nuns/kittens ,just trying to help!

Compared to the goods vehicle test the private mot scheme is very lax as you can take your car away regardless of its condition and if your not happy with the test you can appeal . If mot stations had to gv9 failed vehicles we would be awash with cars within a couple of days . With goods vehicles the operator needs to keep on top of maintenance and should never fail a test .
Joe public can ignore his car 364 days a year , bring it for test and then drive it away as long as it can move under its own power

Do not weld the springs to the cups, if you do the springs will not be able to flex and twist as they are designed to do and they can then snap.

None of those seem silly to me. Loose springs could dislocate and slash a tyre, bad headlight aim can dazzle oncoming traffic and cause an accident, insecure wiring can cause a fire, and rust in a suspension mount could cause a structural failure and cause the suspension to collapse....

The rust was only surface rust.
springs don't come out unless pulled out.the wiring was the sub wiring in the boot

Pin holes in the metal is not surface rust, it is...holes. I suspect it wouldn't take much to be bigger holes.

the metal will be very thin if you've got pin holes in it. I bet my bottom dollar those small holes will turn very big if you took a wire wheel or mbx wheel to it. Chopped springs are just nasty imo.

You said it had pin holes? Those are still holes, and they mean corrosion has perforated the metal and weakened it. As for chopped springs being loose, they could come out if your suspension extends enough. Can't you get lowering springs for this car? Sub wiring fair enough, that's harsh, but is it clear that its just stereo wiring?

There was 1 pin hole..
and yes sub wiring was clear u could see it went up to the amp.
and agree with chopped springs but mot tester said even if I secured them it would fail

Test stations can't stop a presenter taking the vehicle away however badly its failed .
