This is why I seconded the suggestion it was fuel - I've had the same issue, misfires have nearly always been ignition, but total cutting out has always been a fuel issue. It's amazing the things I found over the year that have somehow not only got into the fuel tank, but then got past the filter and ended up in the carb. I remember a Marina years ago that had a huge chunk of rubber in the carb, where it came from I have never figured out.
The most diabolical substance to evade fuel filters is wedding confetti. I am convinced that stuff can dematerialize at will and beam itself directly into the jets.

Seems to run ok at the moment, sometimes a bit hesitant but it hasn't judder or cut out and the fuel pump hasn't gotten any louder.

There's no harm clearing the fuel system. We did that the other day on a 900. Disconnected the fuel lines and blew them out with compressed air. Changed the fuel filter. Cleaned the mesh on the bottom of the pump. Looking for the cause of a misfire. Not sure if it's fixed yet as it's only occasional.

Also, if it is a 900i then I'd expect it to have the mechanical fuel injection rather than a carburettor. The enrichment is adjustable using an allen key. Look next to the intake bellows, there is a tube running down into the fuel metering unit. You can adjust it using a 4mm allen key. Obviously the correct way is to use some sort of mixture tuning device at the exhaust. But if you don't have one of those (I don't) then set the screw by turning it anti-clockwise with the engine running until the engine starts running rough. Then turn it clockwise and count the number of turns it takes to get to the other end. i.e. through from good running to rough running at the other end. Halve the number of turns between the two extremes and set it there. So if 3 turns from one end to the other then the mid-point would be 1.5 turns and an approximate ok setting.
