Hi all. I'm putting new wheels on my xr4x4, and I'm beginning to worry that the arch gap might be somewhat too cavernous... I don't want anything daft, just a light tap, maybe 25mm or so, and a touch firmer. Not much. Are there any coil overs that aren't too spendy? Ta.

It's unlikely to be coil-overs you're after ? The front is MacPherson strut, the rear is separate coil and damper. I did once have a set of 15mm lowering springs on a kitcar with XR4x4 running gear. '52701' possibly from Spax or Monroe comes to mind, but that's from 15+ years ago and there's been much vino since

With the coilovers you remove the rear springs and the coilover shock goes in place of the standard rear shocks, so yes he will be meaning coilovers

Is there any difference between 2 and 4wd cossie coilovers? Other than spring rate obviously. Neither will have the right spring rate for the front of an xr4x4 with a boa in. Any suggestions on spring rate for that matter? I've seen 320lb front and 250lb rear quoted somewhere, and 300lb & 230lb.
Also, what other bits are worth doing at the same time? I'll polybush the seats and eyes.

I clocked those ebay ones in the other thread - I've been watching them, but didn't know if I'm taking a gamble on them being shot. Is that likely? I suppose gas could recondition them, and it'd still work out cheaper than the £600 for new ones.

Having read about this a fair bit, it seems advisable to seam-weld the turrets, and/or put in a strut brace too. The majority of deformation seems to occur inwards as opposed to upwards, so a strut brace will solve a lot of it. Does anyone know if the OPM cossie strut brace kit will fit? I can't think that the shells can be that different, I know most of the suspension parts are fairly interchangeable.

In regards of fitting strut braces to the front turrets I don't think there is any significant differences between any model or age of Sierra. The issue is will it clear the engine? cannot help you on that one You have a BOA V6 conversion? does googling for images of simular engine conversions show what strut braces others have fitted?

I will get round to finishing it at some point

Good call, I've seen them with them on, but never paid attention to the make. Google here I come.

In a word, probably not. Ok, two words. Needs more bend to get around behind the inlet manifold. Never mind, I can just get the rear one from rally design, that's the import bit with coilovers.

Gaz rebuild them for a very reasonable cost so buying them at the start bid and having all 4 rebuilt would come to less than half of what new ones cost As with fitment to the rear a strut brace triangulated to the floor/diff mount area sorts the need to tie the turrets into the sides to strengthen but you can still do that as well of you so please, the front does not require a strut brace at all

I'm merely suggesting an alternative way, via lowering springs, for the OP to achieve the desired lowering. I thought I'd offer a little first-hand info as no-body else had in the 2 days since the OP posted. If I'm being negatory.....

That looks great, especially in that red. Spot on. I started thinking about lowering springs, but I have the suspicion that the shocks will need doing fairly soon, and I'm unsure how much I want to drop it. The problem arises from the fact that I know the springs have drooped, so I don't have a starting reference point. That and the fact I live down the end of a mile-long rough-as-the-proverbial farm track - it scrapes here and there if I'm too keen as it is, so I don't want to get the new spring height wrong and find I have a mile walk every day to get to and from the car...
I'm going to keep my eyes open for a suitable set of coilovers. I'd be happiest if I could find some with 8mm eyes, I'd rather not drill out the mounting holes if I can help it.

Darryl I have re read what I wrote and it unintentionally reads a bit arsey, I wrote it in a hurry, The front is much simpler, the coilover just replaces the macpherson strut, i know where your coming from regarding lowering springs, the only problem is got is i could never get a set that sat my sierras how I wanted them, they were always lower on the rear than they were at the front This is my saph on coilovers the rear is slightly higher than the front, when you look at it side on you can draw a straight level line in your head from the top of the front arch to the top of the rear, I think it sits pretty much perfect
