Wow that roof is shocking!!
My Vitesse has the same problem in the screen pillars, and I'm ashamed to admit I pugged it up just to get it through an mot years ago.
I found a good second hand bulkhead which I'll get round to fitting soon. Ok soon -ish!

Mooooore welding then Not too much to report really but its taken me all day I've finished the repairs to the LH screen pillar and welded on the drip rails that have arrived in the post. That and a lot of faffing and fettling The pics do the talking really It doesnt show but a lot of reconstruction went into the bottom of that pillar. Maybe I should remember to take more pics Some more shocking quality photos coming soon.....ish Cheers!

Well done! That is a difficult area. Some use sections from Spitfire Mk4/1500 which supposedly suffer less. Ours was pretty bad though.
As for the roof......! Best of luck with that. Are you wanting to replicate the original look with seam or going for the seamless look but with metal involved this time?

Hi Nick Yeah its been a bit fiddly to get the panels made up as close as possible to how its supposed to be. According to my manual theres supposed to be a bead of sealant down the drip rails. Hopefully that'll hide a few wobbles where I've welded down the screen pillar. If not then itll need a small skim of filler down them.
I'm going to go with the seam above the windscreen. There is a repair panel available on ebay atm for the front of the roof skin and upper part of the lip. So going to order that and then make the lower lip to match it if that makes sense.
Cheers Ivan

Well I forgot to take any photos until I'd finished again. One more small step to making this car solid taken today with a new lower lop to the roof panel. It may not look much but this took me all day stretching the lip to get the curve right just need to tidy up the welds. I was going to buy the repair panel available on ebay for the upper lip. But its £180 so I'm going to have a go at making it myself tomorrow. I might even take some photos... Cheers Ivan

Not sure if I'm talking complete boll... balderdash but IIRC I remember a restorer telling me that a mini rear valence had a very similar curve to the top of the roof & that it could be fettled to fit!! Please feel free to laugh & point as necessary

Ah, typical '6 roof and pillars, then ;-). Good to see you doing a decent job of making it solid again. Whack a load of Waxoil or the like in behind the lot so it's don't happen again any time soon. I still really, really wish I'd snapped up a GT6 around five years ago - restored mk3 which needed interior and chrome tidy, but fully repaired properly in all the right places for a bargaintastic £3k. The values of them just seem to be going up and up.

The mini rear valance is close but does require some effort... I've done it recently, it's a lot easier if you have a metal stretcher to help with the bend along the lip. It needs to be cut into 3 pieces and fettled rather extensively, but it does work quite nicely and saves £160. Didn't take too long once I'd worked out the best places to cut and got stuck in with the angle grinder. Afraid I don't have any pictures to help but it's not too tricky to sus out!

Have sprayed epoxy primer in as far as I can but rest assured it will get a good soaking in waxoil or similar

I was going to go this direction or at least order a mini rear valance with the view of if it doesnt look like working, just saving it for the mini. Unfortunately the bloke whose unit I'm in had his second heart attack recently and has decided to pack it all in. This meant I had to find temporary storage for the mini and all my stuff and sort the gt6 while I had somewhere dry to weld. So I had to get it all done by last sat as I've been in the lakes all this week This put a bit of a stop on the mini rear valance idea as I didnt have time to get one posted. So I had a go at making one myself. 1st attempt I tried making it all in 1 piece. This didnt go well due to compund curves, lack of skill and more importantly, lack of time. So I cut up attempt no.1 and formed it in smaller bits. As usual not taking photos until I'd finished It didnt turn out too bad in the end. I stretched the guttering lip on each piece to give the right curve and did a little forming to get the compound curve on the roof skin in the corners - a lot easier on smaller pieces. I'll get there one day The roof is covered in dents. Spent some time knocking them out but have missed a crease on the drivers side which is really obvious now its painted. This was hiding under a good half an inch of filler. Theres a strengthening panel beneath it so drilled a hole, screwed a bolt in and pulled the majority out. only needed a small skim of filler then Had tried a decent paint stripper I usually use on this roof but there where so many layers it didnt do too much It is blue now didnt have time to do it properly. Its pretty curse word I only ordered 2 rattle cans originally as I was only planning on tidying up the drivers B pillar as the glass had rubbed when the door was poorly aligned. Those two cans then had to stretch to doing A pillars and posts, scuttle and roof. And it was blowing a gale when I did it. Enough excuses, its a rush job and it still needs the finishing strip welded onto the lip so I'll stick more paint on it then, although that will have to be done outside and again with rattle cans. But at least its not a death trap anymore. Cheers Ivan

I'm impressed. That looks like a proper job. Shiny paint? Meh - over-rated!

Cheers guys Had a bit of a faff about with it for an hour this afternoon Heres the not so shiny paint Had a go at wet sanding starting with 1600 on the first spot I tried which was a bit much. Went through to the primer. I now have a rat look roof. Ended up going 2600 and then 4000 which works niceley. Need to get more grades of wet & dry and more paint I'll wet sand the lot and iron out any other issues and then give it another couple of coats. Its never going to be great though. The roof is covered in dents And to the reason I bought the rattle cans in the first place. To sort this B pillar Not sure if this weld has taken or not. I thought I'd run out of gas or something. Turns out I was welding through lead. There was a lip here before attached to nothing Need to get round to sorting this hole in thedrivers side floor too. Think I'll grind down the whole are and treat it too as its starting to look a bit crusty in places Looking forward to finishing all this faffing about with the bodywork and get round to doing what I started off doing and fit that new gearbox! TBH I don't think this'll see the road again until next summer now. I want it to be right next time I drive it Jobs to do are -finish bodywork -new windscreen(old one is original and severely pitted with grinding flecks by PO) -rebush rear end -new rear shocks(old ones too long & bottom out) -sort drivers window mechanism(very stiff) & possibly new glass -new foam for seats -fit gearbox with new clutch & prop -wire in O/D -ream carb throttle bushes to accept new linings Think thats about it although I'm toying with the idea of spraying the headlining black with that vinyl paint stuff. Its very tar stained and grotty Also want to finish polishing my new wheels and fit them at some point The list goes on.... as I'm sure they all do But first things first - bodywork while the weathers still good Ivan
