hi all
I currently drive a 2000 bmw 728i as my daily driver, all the toys from factory in great nick.
I have had the car a little while now, and I get a decent 27mpg from it mixed driving.
unfortunately I just don't find it fast enough (work for nhs as fleet maintenance, drive a few quick cars there) and ive got the itch to buy something quicker in the coming months.
I'm not really a hot hatch man, I will have 4500 quid to play with.
ive been looking at Porsche boxster 2.7, good looking car.. have been pretty impressed with the figures on paper, quick to 60 for something with 240 ish bhp, same economy as my car etc and good insurance prices.
ive also had a nose at the evo 3 / 4 on ebay, and although very fast 19mpg and a big insurance spike puts me off!
ideally I'm looking for 6 second to 60 or quicker, not a hatchback that gets similar ecomomy to my beamer (I wouldn't be driving quickly all the time, got a bike for that).
wouldn't discount a remappable diesel!
any ideas would be appreciated, or maybe I am asking a little too much!!
thanks

X308 XJR. You`d have a good amount of change from your budget, they`re quick, comfortable, reliable, look good BUT.........you`ll not get 27mpg from one.

540i sounds fun, ive had an e39 before and they are nice cars. I doubt I could get 27mpg on my work route though.
the v8 jag also a good suggestion have driven a few some time ago weren't too bad.
the 330 is a little bit of a weird one for me, had a go in a mates 330d that was remapped and flew but i didn't click with the car unfortunately.
depends how retro your thinking sir, pre 2002 is probably what i'd get with my money i guess, open to suggestions on older stuff, ive had quite a weird array of motors older and newer in my time!
thanks

The problem your going to have is wanting something big and fast thats not bad on fuel, on older stuff its one or the other lol.
Yeah i had a 320d e46 and didnt click with the engine, don't rate diesel bmw's, though 5he 3.0d is supposed to be good.

I had a Boxster before, great fun but not really a 'retro' ride in the sense that everything was scientifically perfect - sharp, balanced, poised and ruthlessly efficient.
I have promised myself another one but it would have to be the 3.2S in manual flavour...upping the budget to 5k would give you a lot of choice in this respect...

Mercedes-Benz 24 valved V8s have dropped in price and get relative good mpg figures when driving sensible.

I have to agree, all black 3.2S in manual with hard top will probably be my next venture. lacks the retro charm though I think.

e39 530i - if you like your 7 but want more pep, it's a great compromise. I've had 2 and loved every minute - can really push on down a back road or cruise across continents. Not really much slower than the 540i in the real world and has massively better steering due to the steering rack not being compromised by a v8.

Before you think about buying a boxster or any Porsche do a quick Google search on the IMS bearing, When it fails it wipes out the engine big time.

What a sense of humour! haha, Although, To be fair, For that money, He could buy it, Tune it and fit LPG, The saloons never seem to command much money. Some nice yanks on ebay atm, even if you skirt around the saloons/sedans

Alfa 159 with the 2.4 Mjet diesel.
About 200 bhp stock, loads of torque, and it's an Alfa. Oh, and you'll get 40-50 mpg. Did I mention it's an Alfa? Everyone loves an Alfa.
Find a good TI spec car and it'll have an embossed TI logo leather interior and sill plates, factory sports suspension, big wheels etc etc Look for the optional Bose hi fi upgrade.
Don't know what's out there tuning wise for them but they're rapid stock so any mods could create a real monster.
