Is there a lip at the top of the bores that you can feel with a fingernail? If not you're in the clear.
Your chums on the mini forum may just be saying you could give the head a heavy skim to significantly up the compression - these engines love a bit of 9.5:1 or even slightly more!

No there is no lip at all the bores are really smooth. The head will be ready next week so I will get it refitted asap .. staying positive !
Other stuff to do is mixture as she has been running very rich so will try a BDL needle in the hif44 carb as opposed to the BBW that it has been running. Will adjust mixture screw but that mainly governs idle mixture.
Then on cosmetic side need to get std cooper alloys on, picked these up cheap thanks to a couple of guys here on RR, one of whom was good enough to bring them over to me from South Wales. This whole project is being done on a budget - I would love some 12" rose petal type wheels with the black satin centres but these cost the earth so will paint the centres satin black and maybe find somewhere locally that can diamond cut the lips.
In need of new tyres all round would love 165s if anyone has some good used ones kicking around? If not 145s will have to do.
Finally will trial fit the mx5 seat, just working out how trim the inset in hound tooth to match the existing interior

Cool wee car. Many years ago I had the opportunity to drive a mini that had a metro turbo engine fitted. Nothing else mind. Just a bloody huge increase in power and no brake etc upgrades. Terrifing fun that was. Enjoying watching this develop.

Cheers
Turbo sounds hairy, even with this motor fitted the power definitely outweighs the available grip. Can't wait for some warmer weather now to take the Moo off to the seaside when all fixed (hopefully)

So .. yesterday collected this from engine recon guy up the road £130 later Shiny! A few hours later it's off up the road to test - was starting to get dark so couldn't make out whether I could still see any puffs of smoke. Certainly pulled well Hope to fettle over weekend will post up results

Went for a test drive today, not good . Intermittent puffs of blue smoke usually on low throttle - used a pint of oil over 60 miles. Tailpipe thick with black deposits So rebore time can't be the head as that's been done around a hundred miles ago . Will go to 1293cc Really would be easier to find a good short engine attached to a good gearbox, trouble is getting one in perfect shape so just got to rebuild it. Shes not our main car and only used for short trips under 40 miles as a rule. Thinking of living with it for now until we've got the cash later in the year. Considering a better 20 50 oil, something like valvoline vr1 / on the other hand since it's not going to reduce the oil consumption maybe I'll just pop in some cheapo stuff as its sacrificial the way it's burning

Checked the breather pipe by taking the oil filler cap off and blowing down the breather pipe, pressure flowing freely out of oil filler so its not that
Reckon the oil control rings have gone so just going to use her around town so she can earn her keep (kind of a promo vehicle for my wifes business) then will have to rebuild the bottom end.
We only paid £300 for the engine so wasn't expecting perfection!
Think I'll get some adjustable neg Camber plates on rear subby, then new wheels and sort geometry. Other little jobs to do and also I need to sort the MR2 for hooning around the Welsh hills

Engine to be whipped out asap for dismantling and inspection oh well these arrived today Shiny ! Turned out one of the other set of wheels I bought previously was buckled so sold on eBay. Besides I want more grip so the yoko A539 165s should sort that out. Can't wait to do our usual North Wales Bala / Evo triangle run in Moo hehe ...

Running the engine rich for a time might not have helped the piston rings. If you get too much fuel in there it washes the oil off the bores and makes things wear out faster. Extra breathers might help, even consider a catch tank. If you haven't done it already try and get the fuelling a bit better.

Yes I'm guessing that happened. My fault. BBW needle as recommended to me by mini spares a load of s**t far too rich. Changed to a BDL too late and have now had emissions checked and carb adjusted so that side is ok now. Anyway just before I take the engine to bits popped new wheels on for something to look forward to when she's back on the road Along with the mr2 which is covered in curse word from yesterday's run to Cotswolds, rear suspension needs a thorough check as rear end was a bit loose around the twisties (and the car rear as well) On a brighter note looking forward to new evening road runs from oswestry over the tops to Bala which are open to people on here. Epic roads . Watch this space if you fancy some fun

State of play since Friday Mini less motor (again) engine split from box - good news is crank looks good long with good bores, getting them checked for ovality. Original sizes on both. Bad news oil pump was half full of black cack, not helping oil to circulate, also blowing between two middle cylinders which should not happened as I tightened head down properly. Back to engineers for re skim, IMO it wasn't skimmed right. Getting help with strip down and rebuild from a real gent who has years of experience with these engines including competition motors. Naming no names as he doesn't have the time to do builds for anyone else. Consider myself very lucky.

Opting to do the job right
getting rebore + 20 Pistons and rebuild goodies arriving from mini sport on Monday, busy painting bits of engine and aiming to get unit back and running in car before end of this month
Fitting solid front subframe mounts for more positive feedback, also want neg camber at rear so adjustable plates going in
Cutting away front of wheel arch as new wheels catching on full lock
All in all should be a cracking little car when done

Master at work. Engine now being assembled by a true gent who today was chatting with me about his rally days, in particular one time he spent co driving Henri Toivonen on a tyre test day in a 205 T16. Apparently felt rather quick !!
Very excited as next Wednesday I'll pick the unit up and get it in the Moo asap yeah!

Excited !
With luck I'm picking engine up tomorrow.
Apparently went together really well.
Head has had two light skims and block one light skim so we will have a larger valve MG metro unit with compression up a bit ... not a bad thing at all
I expect it will be immaculate judging by the high standard of work Ive seen on the car that's sitting in this guys garage.
Photos up tomorrow

Chuffed whipped solid subby tower mounts in whilst engine was out FARKIN engine mounts ! Took about two hours to get bolts aligned but it's in there That's the hard part, now to bolt the rest together, I'm aiming to get it running by Monday evening being very careful with the initial startup i.e. Plugs out, good oil pressure first then first startup at idle around 1500-2000 rpm so as not to labour engine in vital first few seconds Run for 10 mins or so til warm, then let it all cool again. Repeat again twice. Then run for an hour or so if possible without engaging gear of course. Castrol GL 20/50 oil will be changed after 200 miles, refiresh with same oil. 300 miles at max 2500 rpm then rock and roll
