I'm seriously interested in a vehicle that has no MOT. Obviously under the new rules it won't have valid VED from moment I took over ownership. It's in almost immaculate condition so I'm thinking of booking a MOT at my local / normal test station and driving back. It will be properly insured. I don't expect it to fail on anything serious - if at all. Problem is it's nearly 80 miles and 75% of that would be motorway. I can do the return trip avoiding motorways on A roads but will pass though a few towns on the way. So if I buy the vehicle, pre book a MOT so (although stretching the law more than a little) it's still legal for the journey do I take motorway or A roads ? I'd expect it to trigger numerous ANPR cameras whichever route I took and not sure how to deal with that aspect.
Opinions ?
Cheers.

Either will be fine. A friend (really) has done 180 motorway miles to a prebooked MOT before. I did 200 miles in a vehicle which wasn't showing on the MID (but was insured) without being stopped, too. The odds are in your favour, and what you're doing is legal anyway.

Shouldn't be a problem either way really, but I'm pretty sure the law words it with something like "taking the most direct route" in there. If the most direct route is the motorway, then that's the way I'd go. I'd just stick to the route you'd take if driving your daily personally.

Thanks for replys. This is what I'm buying - agreed on £750 due to no MOT. www.lro.com/detail/motors/4x4s/land-rover/discovery/97206Failed pre MOT on front tyres and small amount of welding (body mount - normal for Disco !) Will insure tomorrow (add to my NFU policy) and then arrange MOT - hopefully for something like late morning or midday Saturday. Mate taking me up to collect and will get new tyres fitted in sellers area before tackling journey for MOT.

I've driven from Bristol to Anglesey on a pre-booked MOT, in a scruffy car with no interior, that hadn't been taxed since it was put into storage a few years previously. I knew it was roadworthy, and stuck to motorways and major A-roads all the way back. Never got pulled, but I knew it was a technically legal journey and I'd insured it long before setting off, so I wasn't really bothered.
I would advise booking the MOT as late in the day as possible, just in case it spits its dummy en route. If you got pulled after you'd missed the slot, you'd be in bother, as the fuzz would phone the garage to check.

Collection all revolves around what slot I can get for a MOT. I'm going to my normal test centre tomorrow and checking what times are available but would like one for around midday. That way I can collect early and allow plenty of time for the journey. If I arrive at the test centre too early then I can leave it there and get wife to pick me up.

I'm going to my normal test centre Are they friendly enough to tell Plod, if they phone, that you have an all day appointment because they know you're bringing the car in after picking it up out of town? I've done what you're going to do a couple of times and only been tugged once. It was an unspecified ANPR flag to do with the previous owner, who was obviously dodgy. Plod told me they'd report that the car had changed owner. They said it was showing on MID and they have to do a separate check for VED and MOT on the screen they see when they're driving the car.

Got the Disco insured today. Added to my existing policy (which already covers Smart and Skoda). Just under £300 for full comp with protected no claims meaning I only pay £650 for all three vehicles. One of the few benefits of being an old "flatulence " MOT booked for 11.45 on Saturday so that gives me plenty of time to drive back. Two tyres are needed and found around £20 each cheaper in this area than sellers ! Plan is therefore to nip up tomorrow and remove wheels so I can get tyres fitted on Friday and then refit on Saturday morning for journey home. Body mounts also ordered from YRM www.yrm-metal-solutions.co.uk as they have a very good reputation for making repair panels.

No because it has to be booked in for a test and that means a given time slot, there is no such thing as am all day appointment. What the o/p is suggesting is 100% legal as long as he takes the direct route and doesn't stop for anything except fuel (and obviously junctions/ obstructions)

Personally I'd go A roads just incase it did curse word itself, I'd much rather be jn a layby on an a road than a busy hard shoulder. Also not sure about it having to be to a pre booked 'slot' some garages just bring the car in for a test and fit it into the working day as and when. oh, and I managed nottingham to rhyl in an iveco camper with no test or tax, including a hand throttle, no sideglass, a windscreen gaffa taped in and a front caliper that nearly melted the hub...and got away with it

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman
''unfortanatly I'm quite old and scruffy and in need of some loving. my drive shaft needs a new boot....''

the Mrs drove her MG [and so did I] for a Month without MOT because I wrote the wrong date in on the calender when it was due [DOH!!], we cover a lot of local and M6 motorway miles [J2 to J18] and had passed lots of police traffic cars and systems in that time, didnt get pulled or anything through the door.
however if the insurance had run out it would be a totally different matter
I would drive a car back from a sale with no MOT, or Tax, sure - its not recommended but its only a fine and not points [if you looked at it that way], but don't ever give the police a reason to stop you - make sure all lights are ok, and the car seems roadworthy, and not full of lads or girls, if you get pulled be respectful and chances are you will be on your way without any drama's.

Driving without 'tax' can get the car impounded even if you have just purchased it especially if its is showing as SORN. unless you are going to a prebooked test.

This 'not being able to stop for any reason' en route is nonsense. Hi, yes, on the face of it, it is. But it's to stop people for example phoning up in the morning to book an afternoon test and then using the car to go to work, shopping at lunchtime, pick the kids up from school and any other errands you can think of before taking it for the test in the afternoon. It's to do with the "spirit of the law" and the "letter of the law". Colin

Collected this morning. No problems what so ever. Managed to get to MOT station with 15 mins to spare ! Failed, as expected, but at least if I have triggered any ANPR cameras I have electronic proof on MOT record that it was on the way there. Other than sills (bought new mounts from YRM and will use box section steel for main section), ABS warning light on (but brakes passed), rear shock upper bushes worn, both front wheel bearings rough and have play (ordered Timken replacements), one brake pipe corroded, one bumper end cap loose and catches tyre on full lock, handbrake efficiency below requirement (it's an auto so handbrake probably not used from one MOT to the next !), duff rear indicator bulb (has twin lamps so other worked fine). In all nothing unexpected or anything to worry about sorting so I'm happy with purchase.
