My car recently failed its mot on a rusty sill and some rust on under the back seats. Its only a couple of small patches but the garage wanted £330 to do the work. Anyone know of any welders in kent that would give me a price for the work. Cheers Andy

Have they quoted for a couple of patches or a proper repair where they cut out all of the affected metal which will possibly go much further, let in flush repairs, maybe buy sills, rustproof and paint.
The standard of repair can vary hugely from get through the test to get another year out of a banger to restoration that is a permanent invisible repair.
To be fair even if they are a very cheap garage they couldn't have charged for more than 10 hours which might be reasonable depending on the standard of the work.
Just offering some thoughts.
Good bodywork is extremely time consuming.

I think it would be a proper repair and his prices are normally very fair. He is known for restoring vws and I think he is very good. I was thinking of a quick repair to get through an mot. However I should really spend the money and get a decent repair. The rest of the car is solid. Cheers Andy.

yeah do make sure of what your getting , most mot repairs are a patch welded straight over the rust , so wont last that great and no chance of filling it and blending it in with the rest of the panel

Hi, decide if you want a budget patch to keep it on the road for a few years, or a proper job (but be prepared to pay) you could ask on a welding forum if anyone local can give a price for beer money money www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/I needed 2 small patches on my Siera for an MOT - found it was cheaper to buy a new mig set and learn welding - now don't know how I managed for so long without a welder. maybe worth thinking about most folk on here set their profile (there's a button at the top of the screen) to show where they are, I know you mentioned Suffolk but just in case anyone missed it hope you get sorted, pics are not needed but are always a good idea - we like pics

Heres a picture of the sill. not a large area.

granted the hole isnt a large area, you might be able to get away with a very small patch, however see that large rusty area by your finger?
that isn't going to be sound after the the paint and rust are ground away trying to find a piece of sound metal, might be better asking them to replace/patch a size at least the size of your hand

When welding cars, and in particular floor pans and sills, you can usually reckon on the hole being about 3 times bigger than what you can actually see

like what mr nomad said, for 330 you can buy a very good 2nd hand unit, or a reasonable new welder and do the work yourself, plenty of how to's on the internet, or just get some metal of the right thickness and spend an afternoon practicing before you jump in.

Doesn't sound unreasonable too me for a good quality job. The days of a quick £20 patch are over IMO, consumables have gone really expensive plus welding is so time consuming and liable to grow arms and legs I gave up quoting for it in the end, just gave a ball park figure until the rot was completely cut out and then reassessed. Admittedly doesn't look that bad but after grinding back my guess is most of the front sill is done in, maybe a bit of inner arch as well which is time consuming. My mate tried to do a friend a favour once while on the dole and tried welding up two sills on a Nissan micra. Took him all week, then the inner sills were gone and the guy tried to say scrap it and avoid paying my mate. Went on for months and he ended up with £60 in his pocket. Complete waste of time.

This sounds so familiar, as mentioned all depends on what your after, that little spot can easily turn in to a 2 week job as I found ina customers Astra earlier this week had a small hole hadn't failed the mot but was bugging the gent, after I jacked it up it soon became clear that a good foot along the sill was a paint blister a gentle poke with a screw driver and half the sill gave way, what could have easily seen as a quick job soon became 4 solid days of labour he supplier materials which went the sore side of 200 notes half a inner, and a genuine Vauxhall outer sill wielding materials cutting and grinding discs, etch primer stone chip then a colour match paint, plus 4 days labour for 1 guy, 1 50p size hole and best part of 800 quid later on a 02 Astra, not saying yours is that bad but it can easily be,

Thanks for all the input. I`ve decided to get him to do it as soon as my tax rebate comes through.
