I hate the Stromberg 175cd with a passion. Using them on the jaguar v12 lump makes the engine so wide there's no room for air filters in the Land rover. They are pain to setup and balancing linkages is a nightmare.
I'd like to go upwards but cost effectively something for under £500 would be good.
I was thinking banks of bike carbs (pretty costly) or a very common single barrel carb, something like a Weber 34 ICT.
Can't afford to go all out on some twin choke weber x6 = millions...
No afraid of a bit of engineering and if it's a bit different good.
Ideas for cheap downdraft carbs on mass?

Hi, how about something like twin choke Webers off say a Ford pinto or V6, two V6 or three 2 litre would have fairly close jetting so wouldn't take too much setting up. As lots of people are going over to bike carbs this is displacing these carbs. Have you thought about using SU,s they are easier and hold there setting up better, although that doesn't solve the air filter issue.

Quick Google shows you can get manifolds (in US) to take downdraft Holley carbs for the V12. Could you make something similar out of plastic plumbing fittings, ply etc and then use that as a pattern to have it cast in alloy ?

a bank of 34ICTs (I guess 3 or 4) running down the centre would be cool, reminiscent of a triple or quad setup from the US...
I was going to suggest 3 weber DMTL or DGVs, they're about £50-100 each second hand, very versatile and give good economy, but may cost a bunch to set up correctly (emulsion tubes, air jets, main jets, idle jets)
you'll still have linkage issues whatever you go for though...
What about a big old american 4 barrel and a custom manifold?

Going for one final beating on the Stromberg this weekend. See if I can get it to at least idle at a reasonable level.

Hmmm you got me thinking now, maybe use the injection manifolds with the throttle body holes welded up then machine the tops flat and whack the carbs straight onto them. Saves the faff of making up manifolds could run 2 or even 3 weber's side by side.

chop the face of each (carb) manifold off, and like in this picture, get a different flange welded on... but in your case, you could be able to chop off the end section, flip it 90 degrees, and have a manifold that's ready for a downdraught carb? EDIT: There's even the possibility, of swapping the manifolds around, so each side points to the middle. Then get a downdraught carb flange welded on to each "pair" of manifolds. Clearance would need to be checked, or some monstrous spacers might be the answer?

Are they made out of Homebase gas fittings or something?

Are they made out of Homebase gas fittings or something? *n Looks like it, there's 21 of them?!? Why would someone make 21 copper pipe inlet manifolds for 1.5" S's?
