Hey guys and gals! So ive had this little guy for a couple of years now. Been a daily runner and all round workhorse. But now its time for a refresher. Its a Toyota KP37 or Publica with a 3k 1200 motor I bought it from an elderly lady which had it resprayed at some point. But unfortunately I found out that the so called body shopped just pulled a quick one on the lady. Shoddy patch jobs and fibreglass everywhere. Not to mention the hidden rust... everywhere!!! Thus aply named Sir Rust-a-lot! I had to get him through Roadworthy (MOT) before December last year however I broke my leg/ankle in August and was pretty well out of commission :/ Started working on him as soon as I could muster up the strength to hop around... that... and lots of pain killers. I started to repair the badly rusted areas, however the more I dug the worst it became... so I to did a patch job just to get him on the road again. but now the time has come for a major overhaul. Full tear down to bare metal and refurb of amy needed parts. This however will only start in December this year [summer in South Africa] so for now I've invested in a set of Yamaha R6 carbs and fuel pump. So will be starting the design of the manifold this week. If anyone has a template for the 3k intake mani gasked I would really like to get my hands on it. Thats all for now...

Is this some kind of predecessor to the Starlet? (I guess that not every of them was pickup bodied?)

Oooh, first KP pickup I've ever seen actually! Looks cool as. What are the problem rust areas? Haha thanks! Still a lot to do to get it where I want it but getting there slowly. Rust areas are mainly doors, sills, the lid at the back, bonnet, floors etc so pretty much everywhere! hahahahaha Will post some pics of the "repairs" i did... which I need to redo now

Is this some kind of predecessor to the Starlet? (I guess that not every of them was pickup bodied?) I think so yes The KP30 was the start of this. Then you got the KP37 (Publica) which is the pickup.

I was going to mention that gaskets for 3K's are pretty easy to obtain here in Australia, I just purchased some intake and exhaust for mine a couple of weeks ago through work, and I even had more than one choice! Which 3K is it though? You have 3K, 3KB, 3KBR, 3KC (mine), 3KD, 3KH, 3KJ, 3KHJ and 3KU! And there's a few variations within those, too. Are you planning on keeping everything original? I imagine the ute itself wouldn't weigh much, but with a bit of load in the back it'd probably struggle a bit! Just did a little googling. 79 KP37 was a 3K weighing in around 665kg! Or the later model utes had a 4KJ, and the KP38 had the 3KHJ. I'm considering scrounging bits from a 4K to gain a bit of extra power, further in to the future. But anyway, nice ute!

Well gaskets was cheap at least. Seems pretty easy to get parts motor wise but not body wise. Yeah its a stock 3k motor. And no... far from. I want to ticker. Well I love to ticker! Haha so not gonna stay stock for long. For the stock its pretty nippy. And at 650kgs its light enough if you just run a bit more power. was considering a 5k swap but I like the thought of a 1200 with bike carbs. And thanks! Also do you have a kp30?

No, I have a Morris Minor with a 3K in it. Yes, luckily they're both light cars, or the 40-odd horses left would really have struggled!

I seem to be stalking Varelse....
Did you guys know that the later model TownAce/LiteAce had a 7K with EFI and 5speed? I had always thought about swapping one into an old KE corolla.

Heh, same interests and viewing times, I guess. Yes, I am aware of the 7k, although not sire how much bigger it is. I am yet to do any real research on it. To be honest, if I go to the effort of dropping a different motor in this, I'll probably go down either the 4AGE/ZE route or try my hand at the CA18/20 plan I originally had. For now I just want I on the road, though. Sooner its registered, the sooner I can get my 4wd sorted. /threadjack over
