So basically I'm almost building my AE86 up from the ground. Lots of welding. Gearbox rebuild. Suspension and brake overhaul. Full rewire. Digidash. Already has a rebuilt engine. Brand new diff and CW&P. Respray. Inside painted and new buckets going in.
Now I plan on using the car for drifting and track use. With weekend road use.
A lot of my mates reckon I am bat curse word crazy for sinking so much money into a classic and doing what I plan to with it. Doesn't bother me. It's what I want.
But what's general opinion on this one.

Do what you want with it, it's your car. If you do enough drifting it'll get bent at some point though, as long as your ok with that go for it.

Like I said in op. It's what I want. And I know the consequences of doing it. Plan to spend time up at driftland and knockhill.

Your approach is no different than the classic rally or race folks and they operate with some astronomically valuable kit.
If you want to do it, know the consequences, and are prepared for possible outcomes then it's a no brainer.

Ditto above, do what you want with it.
I just hope you're 'good' at drifting so you don't have to spend ages getting it back up to scratch again.

Over the last three or four years I have been helping a friend re-build a car and get it running. It uses a whole bunch of specialist 50 year old tech that we've had to learn as we've gone along. So far he's managed to drive it about half a mile and is hoping to add a couple more miles to that this year if all goes well. So, urgh, who's the crazy one again?

Go for it. Like you have said you know the consequences of drifting it and knowing every nut, bolt and component to it goes a long way to really understanding the feel of the car. We're currently coming to the end of a full build on a corsa b gsi for a customer that is going to stand him in best part of 20k!!! and he knows full well its wouldn't sell for a quarter of what he has put into it, but it's what he wants!

I'll echo what Seth said, I've met plenty of people who have spent large amounts (high five figure sums in some cases) re building cars which barely see the light of day. Now that's their choice and if polishing and trailer-ing cars to shows gives makes them happy then happy then who are we to criticise, but cars are for using aren't they. If you can't (legally) use the car to it's full potential on the street then why not take it to the track?

Just be prepared to fix it and keep the bodywork straight occasionally ... but you wouldn't be the first person to use a very well turned out car in anger. It all just depends on what your budget runs to : AMOC Brands Hatch 7th July 2013 by Retro Rides, on Flickr

Building a car and then it becomes a trailer queen. Or never sees light of day.

Because owning a car is part of the enjoyment.
I enjoy cleaning and showing as much as anything else there is a real sense of pride.
I don't have a trailer queen car though infact I don't even have a car I could put on a show stand but I can understand those that do trailer them about as people like me travel all over and look at them with masses of envy.
I'd love to say that if I owned my dream car a Ferrari 250 GTO that it would be used as it was intended but in reality I doubt it would even see 50 miles a year, but I would get as much if not more pleasure looking, cleaning and sharing it with others.
Mind the Ferrari is a few million away from my ownership so I don't think it is likely to be anything I would actually have to worry about lol.

Trailer queen cars, isn't that like marrying a supermodel and watch someone else dribble over her, whilst all you do is buff her with a microfiber cloth instead of taking her to valve bounce like a king.............
