I picked the car up on Sunday from it having the head gasket done ( repairs were finished about 8 weeks ago but troubles with fuel pipe put me back!!). All was good went for about a 30 mile run, running fine, seed to be doing everything correct. Used it for work and back Monday all fine. Same again Tuesday with a trip to Sheffield after work so a gentle run back down the motorway, all felt good. Then Wednesday morning started the car after two try's (not off as it took a little starting sometimes), heard a hissing noise then the oil light come on and it's dumped the oil all over the drive. Quick look underneath and looked like the filter was loose. Tightened that up last night, new oil in then it's done the same again!!!!!!
Apart from giving it a thrashing with a large stick I haven't a clue!!!!

Is it a spin on filter? Have they fitted the right one or have the threads been damaged on the filter/mount?
I had work Omega did the same when the garage that serviced it fitted the wrong filter.

Could the old filter seal still be on? I've done that myself before!

If it's not anything stupidly simple like a missing or damaged filter seal then it could be that the oil pressure relief valve is jammed shut. I had this on a Zetec - Cold oil pressure off the gauge it blew the seal out of the filter. Thank fully on the Zetec you can get to it externally to rectify.
Also good call on the on the filter thread size - some of the filters with imperial threads fit metric ones ( or other way around) and tighten up but they slop on the threads and could move when under pressure.

Does it have one of those oil/water heat exchangers mounted between the oil filter and block? Pretty sure my 2.2 B3 90 did.
If so, with the oil filter off you need to check that the big flat nut in the centre is decently tight so it doesn't leak between the cooler and block. If not that then as already mentioned, you need to check that the threads on the stub the filter screws onto are good then I'd be trying another filter

PS. have also seen filters split and leak at the swage where the can joins the top flange - proper VAG ones too......

PS. have also seen filters split and leak at the swage where the can joins the top flange - proper VAG ones too...... That could be it then. The plastic cover looks to have slipped away a little from metal shoulder at the top

Update time; The oil filter was at fault or the mechanic that fitted it as the rubber washer had split. So fingers crossed should be running good again now!!!

Don't use driveway cleaner, it won't remove the oil. This has acid in. Dunno about the oil leak though.

... it could be that the oil pressure relief valve is jammed shut. I had this on a NOS Ford x-flow pump, that blew the seals out of 2 new spin-on filters before we traced the cause
