After having our 4th child, the delica is no longer big enough ( boots too small and i keep loading the interior with the shopping, buggy and all the other bits we need)
I need something big... I'm not talking minibus' yet, but its a possibility
I need something with a heap of space inside as well as a big boot/load area
Possible ideas so far are yank day vans or a mk3 transit i can jack up and prat around with if its leaf sprung all round
Main things I'm after...... Meaty engine ( around the 3.0 mark ) Diesel Rwd is a massive want ( cant stand front wheel drive) Possibly 4x4
Needs to be as reliable as possible as it will be family transport
don't mind some welding or mechanical work but theres only so much time i can put i to it
Can anyone think of something i can't?
Thanks again

How much do you want to spend? And does it need to be retro?
Bmw 735d are looking very cheap these days.

Will it seat 6 minimum? ( bear in mind the delica seats 7)
We have a 10 year old, 4 year old twins on booster seats and a baby carrier, need the extra space due ti the booster seats and baby one
Retro or not, but as long as the price isn't stupid, I'm sure up to about £4k seems reasonable

In the same boat myself mate, had all the usual suspects (galaxy,zafira,pug807,Alhambra,Lucida) Looked into Chevy day vans etc but running costs are obviously far greater (think 3.5v6 petrol lugging all that car about, parts etc) kinda put me off! Not yank or rwd but the best of mine was a import Toyota Lucida Estima. 8 seats if you want them, all slide around and fold away and the interior room was amazing. 2.2 td, but excellent mpg and you could run it on veg oil! J ones are usually far better spec'd. Obviously budget plays a big part, all mine where bought for under £1k, if you've got a decent budget, there's plenty to choose from yank wise.

Id love a dodge ram 2500 to be honest, seats 6 happily and I'm used to the 21mpg everywhere but its the buying cost that puts me off
The chevy astro with the vortec motor seems nice
I migjt end up with a bloody transit minibus at this rate, my ebay account is gonna hate me

I've got the delica, i do love it
Having driven the usual suspects ( hated the zafira with a passion, proper uninspiring...... Even the boy racer edition)
The lucid look ok, but with all the seats out they still have a small load space
Back to the drawing board i guess

don't E300's have those extra seats? like the Volvos and discoverys, though the load space is somewhat limited with all the seats used.

Judging by the previous suggestions not being big enough and wanting rear wheel drive then a mk 4 or earlier transit crew van or tourneo or if you can find one the later rac spec transits are rear wheel drive but quite rare to find a crew cab.

My wagon of choice is the KIA Sedona, can get 40 mpg on a run, don't get an auto unless you love visiting fuel pumps. Also it sort of qualifies as yank, as the original design was Ford. The walk through seating means its handy for those emergencies that happen when driving along with nowhere to stop. Can suffer rust, sliding door failure (easy to fix) cambelt is a pig every 60K. Just gonna leave this here: I'd do bad things for a decent 505 wagon. In the real world though, 2+3+2 seating is always more practical than 2+2+3 like you get in a Delica... SharanGalaxAlhambra isn't ever going to be the most exciting drive, but they can be hopped-up nice: Silver VW Sharan on BMW wheels by Retro-Motoring & WoertherseePics, on Flickr Had two of them (first one written off spectacular stylee on the M25). Most of the time we just pulled one of the rearmost seats out to give plenty of space for 4 kids + loads of luggage space. Got an XC90 now though, which probably ticks almost none of your boxes.

There's half a dozen stretched Yank limos on EBay for your budget. *n Good idea, and if you still insist on an estate then import a Buick Aerobus. Failing that, hunt around banger yards for the last remaining Granada Windsor/Minster estates (I'm sure most have been raced now though)

The Toyota Lucida is available in LWB which adds over another foot to the boot, the boot area even in the non LWB is still big enough for a push chair and a weeks shopping, much bigger than that of a Delica.
I bought a Lucida to transport my motorbike around in but the slanted tailgate didn't allow the clearance I needed unlike the Delica which is square.
The boots are all around the same size on the larger MPV's such as the Lucida, voyager, Espace which are bigger than the Galaxy and such like which is alot bigger than the like of the flexi 7 seaters of the Zafira.
I've had an Espace, Zafira, Voyager, Galaxy, Lucida and Vito. I currently have a LWB Hi top Transit, Discovery 1 & 2, Toyota Auris, 205 GTi and 2 motorbikes. Both the Disco's are broken but the back of a D1 is a joke and the D2 is better but forget putting shopping in the back when you have the boot seats down.
If it was my 4k I'd be going for a Voyager or if you can find a VW Caravelle.
Although you can get a Lucida 4x4 for very sensible money I paid £500 yeah it needed a bit of work but it was only service stuff.

I would have said LWB T4 caravel maybe even a SWB. Can get them with a VR6 lump too. May even be able to get the 4x4 Syncro for 4k if you look for long enough.
