The question is at the end.... Inspired by hammy MX5 thread and removing rust using electrolysis, I decided to have a go, even on the same parts MX5 caliper carrier. Today was a trial run; I nicked some bicarbonate of soda from SWMBO's baking shelf well it was past it's best by date.... My basic set up, I later changed the copper wire for a bit of old coat hanger, and cleaned the bucket Then added some power As I didn't have much baking soda the results weren't that great but there was definitely progress Need to get hold of some Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and give it another go. What's the best metal to use for the sacrificial plate, I was using galvanized steel which probably isn't ideal? Frost sell a kit which I'm guessing is basically the same idea for £60 with a pulsed power supply. Mark

I think washing soda (not bicarb) is the stuff you need and some ungalvanised steel would work much better. Its possibly a bit dangerous using galv... I know it gives off some nasty fumes if you weld or grind it.

you should be using washing soda as sam says. i use rebar with a nut welded on the end daisy chained together with wire for the sacrificials. (it works by 'line of sight' so more anodes surrounding the item to be cleaned give better cleaning. if you only have a plate one side it will only clean that side of it)). don't use stainless, it gives off hexivalent chromium, which is pretty nasty stuff by all accounts. i find scalextric powerpacks make a good power source too.

Hi, as DEZ says washing soda, 1kg bag (£1 from Tesco) to 10 litres of water. More anodes round the bucket, can be any rusty steel, it doesn't matter because it's going to end up rusty. Put a 2 watt bulb in series as that will control the current.

Thanks for the feedback, I made sure I was doing it outside in case of any fumes etc, and this was just a quick experiment with what I could find lying about. Since posting I've found this link to instructables which confirms all of the above. Where's a good source for washing soda (edit: Tesco I posted this before the reply above)? good suggestion for scalextric power packs I've got a couple in the loft I can dig out. Thanks, Mark

i find scalextric powerpacks make a good power source too. If anyone wants to try this, I've got 10+ Scalextric power-packs going spare Collect from Tyneside'ish (NE24) or sort out pony express if you want a couple to freebies to experiment with (or make a stupid-cheap offer and take the lot !)

Hi, the "fumes" given off is a mix of Hydrogen and Oxygen, very flammable so outside and no naked flames or sparks. Switch off power source at plug before disconnecting clips.

i have been experimenting recently and found that TFR (traffic film remover) is a good alkaline for the mixture. Here is a before and after pic i posted with the results http://instagram.com/p/1ggOxpxUtI

Oooooh, really thinking about giving this a go. Plenty of cruddy old parts to try it on. So the more anodes (that's the sacrificial bit right?) the better the finish?

i used some 1" weld mesh i had kicking around and made a basket shape to fit inside a plastic 25L drum, that worked a treat for me.

I whacked it in an old cast iron pan what I found in the back hedge... Man-sized anode. Manode?

I did this last year with some front hubs. I found that the battery charger didn't like it much, my old one broke and its new replacement broke. I ended up using the battery charger to charge a battery and using the battery for the electrolysis.

Hi, yes, probably because the batt charger "saw" a near enough dead short and so was working flat out,if you have the bulb in series it limits this current. You get a better process and it's easier on the charger.

Oooft, we do this indoors all the time. Gas and explosions didn't cross my mind.
We've got a ring of wire with multiple rebar anodes in a chopped down plastic barrel, had really good results with it.
For brake calipers and the like I used a heat gun to dry it off and got paint on it quick, I was surprised at how quickly the corrosion came back when I left some treated parts sitting for a few days.

My wife came back from Sainsbury's yesterday evening with a bag of washing soda... think I'm going to use some (4) lengths of angle in the bucket and get the scalextric PSU down from the loft. Good tip re heat gun
