So, after being away from aircooled VWs for the best part of five years I found myself getting the itch again for one. I decided to take a look around and found one on eBay fairly locally, gave the seller a call, and it turns out it was stored in a barn about a quarter of a mile from my house. Decided to go view, ended up having a bid on eBay, and got outbidded by nearly £1000! Seems Beetle prices had gone crazy in my absence (not surprising really I always seem to sell cars before they rocket in value ). Anyway, fast forward a couple of weeks and I get a call from the seller offering me the car, due to being messed around by people on eBay. End result is this coming to live with me; It's a 1972 model from South Africa. Imported into this country in 1978. Around 72000 miles on the clock. Drives like an absolute dream and puts a smile on my face!

That looks pretty damn tidy. Original or has someone had a go before?

I think i know this car! A guy in hampshire called alfie owned it (or another SA model in that exact colour with matching wheels) about 10 years ago. He had it for a good while before that.
He used to run VW services in fair oak near Southampton. Specialised in older aircooled stuff., General day to day upkeep of them realy rather than resto's.
Was absolutely mint back then. Though its still looking damn tidy now if it is indeed the same car.
Bit odd too arnt they these SA models.
60's rear lights and wide fives, With upright wings and big windows

I had a look back through the history, and it has a lot of receipts from the Woking/Guildford area in the 90s, before moving to London/Tunbridge Wells for servicing, so might not be the same car. Yeah, the SA bugs are a bit weird, but I like that about them. It's good to be different Glad you posted up matey. It is better than expected. Interior is lovely. In all fairness I think the photos make the exterior look better than it is. It needs some work. Really pleased with the new interior though. Just afraid to sit on it now incase I get it dirty!

wow! if thats not the same car then thats pretty amazing that theres two the same. And totally agree with the goof to be different comment. In the world of aircooled vw's its hard to be different, and good when you can.

Doesn't the D-ring wheel clash with the wiper stalk? Or have you found a way round it?

Doesn't the D-ring wheel clash with the wiper stalk? Or have you found a way round it? Sorry for the late reply. Yep it does, I found that out when I went to push it back in the garage! I contemplated filing down the stalk and spacing the wheel out a bit, but decided against it and it's pretty original overall so didn't want to mess too much.

Anyway, something amazing happened today. For the first time in years I had three working, road legal classics on the road! As the weather was good and the missus was away for the day with littlun, I decided to have a play with cars. Group shot; Nothing major for the Beetle, just a quick clean up, and fit of a spare bumper that I had laying around as the old one was a bit rusty; New cleaner version; Also got round to fitting a parcel shelf;

Not being a v-dub guy , whats the difference between a german and an african beetle? One's made in Germany, the other is made is South Africa In all seriousness, in the late 60s the Beetle went through a load of changes, new panels, lights, bumpers, suspension, wheels etc. For some reason the South African models didn't have all these changes. For example they run early K&L suspension and early 5 stud wheels, as opposed to the balljoint suspension and 4 stud wheels that German made beetles of the time had. They also retained the early rear lights. I'm sure there's various other differences, but all in it just makes them a bit rarer thats all.
