Hi, Hoping to have a 200hp motor in my mk2 Cortina by the time it's done. What do you think would be a good brake upgrade if required by the engineer? I have a feeling he'll be ok without a servo but require rear discs. Thoughts? Any OEM parts that'll do the job?

something like a 280mm vented disc with 4 pot calipers will be fine. pad compound will make the difference so something like a mintex 1144 would be ideal.
as a comparision, my old mk4 golf had 200bhp and 214lbs of torque. a heavy car at 1400kgs but was awesome with a 330mm vented disc and big brembo caliper. cheap pads faded quickly though.

Vented discs and proper pads, something like Ferodo DS2500 will be fine
I`m gunning for 250hp, 750-800kg and I'm running twin pot front elise calipers on 256mm vented discs, with some thin 24mm dia solid discs on the rear (as they wont do much)
Bias pedal box, no servo 5:1 ratio, so it`ll take some pushing
All of this will be under 13" rims too

What did the later Aussie cortina's fitted with the 250 crossflow run brakewise? Is anything from a fast falcon of the period useable?

If it is possibly to go for a CapriSport esque brake conversion that would be the way I would go. It would also potentially be more effective that the above solutions and be kinder on the wheel bearings.

What is a Capri Sport upgrade (pardon my ignorance - I'm new to fords/english fords.) Is it a company or parts from a sports model Capri?

CapriSport were one of the vendors who took a different approach to looking at brakes. Instead of looking at Princess calipers where the benefits in braking power were questionable they decided to go for calipers which gave more power, were more reliable and even throw some modern technology into the mix. Basically, the disc is move outboard so that it sits on top of the hub, like a new car. This means the heat is transferred into the wheels and not the wheelbearings, which also potentially cools things down a little faster. Mk1 Mondeo callipers were the calliper of choice. From what I understand it is a very effective conversion. Whether it would fit a Cortina is another matter but if they brake setup is the same as Capris I cannot see why it would not work. It is an avenue to consider anyway . www.zyworld.com/caprisport/1_brakes.htm

Thanks for the link, I've only had a chance to part-read it but it looks pretty good. Hopefully I can keep everything under the standard 13's. Will see I guess!

A 240/250mm disc is probably about as big as you could hope to fit inside 13" wheels, unless the disc/caliper is inboard of the wheel..

Cheers. Brake upgrade ppl I spoke to basically said 15" were the only wheel theirs would fit under. Just another headache.

If you end up fitting larger wheels anyway, Then look into the roters from the ford focus st 170 they are 300 mm with a 4 x 108 bolt pattern. I had them on my Mondeo mk1 with the calibers from a mondeo mk 3 with green stuf EBC pads. Best brakes I ever had on a car!
