some more done , i went to the local bolt place and got some nice big m12 allen bolts for the top arms .... and some tiny weeny little 6ba brass screws for the rev counter fun and games i planned for the afternoon. we will come back to these later , i also redid the rack mounts properly (which was a total barstard !) and then started on the rev counter face glass . now , this rev counter started life as a radio room clock on the wall of a ship or probably coastal station . i bought it off ebay for 20 quid ,and hoicked out the inners ,and bolted in the rev counter mechanism from a xj40. biggest problem was the long needle would be too heavy , so i got a .5mm carbon rod, as used in rc cars ,and then counter balanced it with a 3mm length of 1mm soldering wire super glued to the other side of the needle pivot.cool. interestingly, i found a slight scraping of red paint on the clock dial , and after a bit of research , it turns out that ,from 1908 to 1932, they had the red triangles on the face to tell radio operators when to be silent to listen for sos transmissions on the 500khz band ,then in '32 they used the 1650 khz band ,and then had red and green bands ...wooof !.....nice to know the clock was of the same time period i am trying to replicate with the car. it had no glass in it when i bought it , and i found a chap on ebay that would make me a 6mm glass with a bevelled edge ,and fit it to the front door . unfortunately it arrived back with the glass loose ,because the door was too worn ,and had insufficient depth to the mounting groove . it had originally come with three retaining tags , so i set to, making three more ,and then i was going to glue it in as well.. original tags.. drilling and retapping to 6BA.. i shortened the 6 brass screws to suit ,then i cut three tabs out of the finger plate brass ,and filed and drilled to suit.. then glued it all together and fixed the tabs all round.. i think it might just work .phew ! so todays list looks like this .. 1) check thread engagement on steering arms ............DONE 2)bolt up panhard rod mounting bar to chassis...........DONE 3)refit n/s floor 4)wire up boot lock with switch ........................DONE 5)edge trim retaining 6)mount horn somewhere 7)charge battery .......................................DONE test drive brakes 9)grip tape on floors 10)gear lever modify to get reverse with bigger steering wheel ....DONE 11)flare rear arches ..................................DONE 12)tighten wheel nuts .................................DONE 13)trim ally sheet above brake pipes 14)check steering rack mount bolts . ...... I've kind of been dipping in and out of this, so good to see it nearing completion!!
I had a quick suggestion; instead of grip tape, how about paint mixed with sand/grit?
Should have more colour choice and no peeling issues

well today i got the horn ! ....fitted to the car i had hoped to fix a brass 4 trumpet bulb horn to the side of the car , but no way was it going to fit ,so , after fitting the floor to the passenger side , i set to with a couple of horns that made a pleasing mellow tone , one was a big old horn off a 50's commer or something ,and the other was a new little horn i had bought for a bike and never used . i mounted my little horn in the chassis , then the huge big shiny horn in full view for maximum hornyness! then popped a little green button on the dash to activate my horn.. noice ! let me tell you , trying to get the wire from the switch to the horn ,without taking the floor back up, was a lying under the car with a torch and a long hooky thing trying to get it past the prop shaft ,kind of thing ....and not fun in 26c in the shed ...oi vey. so lets look at the list shall we ? 1) check thread engagement on steering arms ....DONE 2)bolt up panhard rod mounting bar to chassis...DONE 3)refit n/s floor ........................................... okay dooohkay ! well yesterday i fulfilled item no 762 on the list , test drive the car to see how the brakes are now ...we took a vid or two , but have not yet edittted em , here are a couple of stills.. me burbling down the drive .. and cruising back for tea.. the test report was not good ! 1)brakes were working but v poor , at least one wheel not doing anything . 2)engines felt rough and a knocking noise was heard when revs got very low . 3)pedals are hard to push because the seat is so thick and wumfy , its like being eaten by a giant white blood cell with Raquel Welsh not helping AT ALL .,,the more you push the pedal, the more eaten you become ,,may need a bit of wood in there ,the seat that is ,not RW. 4)steering was good and light .car drove straight . 5)engines started v easily , bit of smoke on startup then clear after a bit of running . 6)rev counter needle not working still too heavy . 7)dig temp gauges work well , 50 c after run with no fans . 8 ) oil pressure 80 on 4.0 and 80 at revs down to 40 at tickover on 3.6. so today i started on the brakes ,jacked up the car and tried to spin the wheels ,while v stamped on the pedal , and it became obvious that the front n/s and rear n/s were non functional , which figured since i had done the other two ages ago . front caliper off... not v healthy.. got the pistons out by blocking them one by one and pressing the pedal so each of the 4 pistons was free before i took it off the car , so once in the vice of love ,pulled them right out ,and cleaned them up , found new pistons in 41mm diameter are the same as discovery 1 ones , so i can get new ones , which it will need, when i put new pads in , but for the moment it works now nice and free with the old pads ...bled it up and then onto the back brake . the back brake was the usual drum hammer fest , although easier once i had discombobulated the auto adjuster ,once the drum was i then got the cylinder out , freed up and honed and reassembled....then started putting the curse word retaining clip in....during the twisting and turning to try to get this in , my middle back decided game over for a bit and gave a breathless warning spasm , ,so i came indoors and took a licorice pill or two ,and did some exercises . then went and tidied up the cave ,and potter, hoping it would ease off . then had lunch , and rested it . then wandered out and pottered and thought hey maybe i could just kneel down and try a different method , ,and what do you know ,30 m later it was done and the wheel was back on !! liquorice pills FTW > ! then bled all the brakes again , using my gunson easy bleed and a 15 psi spare wheel , got some more bubbles out of the fronts , and so ready for another test drive i think . tomorrow i investigate the engines , may have oiled up a plug or two . oh , disappointingly , my mot man is on hols this week , so not mot for me ..pooh ...but then again , i can relax and got stuff done ...yin ...and ...yang . regards robert.

Thank you George ,it is very exciting , and loooong , it feels a bit like steering this ... meanwhile.. yesterday i adjusted the brake pedal mechanism , ,and made the pedal much firmer , and then did the same with the clutch ,when i found this .. not a lot of metal left , so i made some little metal polo's welded them in situ.. and that's a lot stronger ,and hopefully wont leave me stranded on the tyrol one day with no clutch. now ,with two nice firm pedals i started on the engines . First thing i did was try to get the rev counter to work ,with a bit of trial and error ,and using my timing light to check rpm , i added and removed strips of lead solder to counterbalance the needle like so .. and that is now spot on ....noice ! then i checked my tdc mark on the 4.0 litre ,and found timing at 7 d btdc ,so wapped that up to 15 ,where i wanted it , i appear to have no vacuum advance going on , so i guess the engines need a bit of a bedding in to make some proper vacuum . then did the same with the 3.6 , up to 15d ,and all seemed a fair bit smoother . pipes are coloring up a bit more too... then used my camera and checked the throttle body synch .... not very good ! more tomorrow ...hasta luigi ! regards robert

Thank you George ,it is very exciting , and loooong , it feels a bit like steering this ... Strange you say that Robert as I've always thought that if they made another this car would fit in to that film perfectly! You may have mentioned this earlier in the thread but had you any intention to change the wheels at some point? Budget permitting of course, but they just seem, errrr how to put this, a little 'plain' compared to the rest of the car now...
