Hello everyone.
I have a MK6 escort van with a very tired 1.8 endura D non-turbo engine. To remedy this i'm looking at swapping in a 1.8 endura tddi turbo diesel engine from a MK1 focus.
To the best of my knowledge they both use the MTX75 gearbox and the same block so i should be able to use the drive-shafts and mounts from my original engine/gearbox, just leaving the ecu and wiring harness to swap over ( ? )
What i'm not unsure about is if I have missed something along the way, so if anyone has any pointers or has swapped an engine in one of these before then please drop me a comment before it all goes wrong!
Cheers in advance.
James

I swapped a TD out of a mondeo into my mk6 escort van. It was not a smooth operation. Hope you fancy a read. I cracked the oil pan on the esco, and thought "finally! an excuse to upgrade!" And promplty found myself a nice ~1997 TD mondeo. Obviously founds where scarce as usual, but the car was only 160€. I managed to get it haggled down to about 100€, beacuse we didn't get the car to start. Well worth the 250km roundtrip. As the donor car was very cheap, you could expect it had a few faults. For example the indicators didn't indicate, and the car had been driven over a concrete roadblock, resulting in a slightly banana-shaped car, with a cracked oilpan. Fear not, we started the swap, carefully removing the car around the engine. As these cars are front wheel drive, i've heard you should drop the whole subframe, and remove the engine that way. Now comes a few small hurdles, as this wasn't as plug and play as i'd hoped. This was done over a weekend, and i needed the car, so a.. "fast" approach was used. - The intercooler is too large - remedied by cutting away some excess sheetmetal.
- The non-turbo escort uses the ib5 box, and the mounts and driveshafts of the mondeo doesn't fit the escort - fixed by mounting the ib5 to the TD - 80mph top speed
- The immobilizer checks the pump, using magic i presume, to immobilize the vehicle - fixed with a push-button start
- The mondeo diesel pump has about 583 wires, the escort 3. - So i used the 3 i had.
- The mondeo uses a MAF, and other fancy electric wizardly - throw them away
- Downpipe doesn't fit - weld it
- The pump bracket didn't fit, i don't remember why, so i welded it
- Oil pan is cracked - weld it
- profit?
This resulted in a starting and driving vehicle, but not a very good one. The mondy pump uses electricity to adjust the timing, so the car pinged constantly during anything byt 5000rpm, i guess you could fix this by adjusting the pump, but i never got around too. Mainly beacuse it was nice and nippy with the excessive timing, especially with the high ratio gearbox. The next week we search high and low for a mysterious, and very violent front end shake that was rattling the car to pieces. Turns out a bearing in a drive shaft had come lose, but stayed inside the joint. I drove it about a month, and suddenly it died, first i thought i'd finally melted the pistons due to the pinging, but turns out the immobilizer-controlled stop solenoid in the pump (which i was aware of from the beginning) had finally decided to, well, immobilize my car. Good thing i was only 100km away from home. As i had welded the rear pump bracket before (for reasons i don't remember) i had to cut a hole in it to get access to the stop solenoid, and replace it with a generic 1-wire stop solenoid. (stop solenoid not pictured, but looks like the solenoid in the side of the pump) Drove it another month, it kept dropping fan belts once a week, and i think diesel got in the oil somehow. It didn't start well beacuse the electricity controlling the timing was removed.. Traded it for a mk3 golf for a huge loss. It also dropped a front ball joint, which was exciting. So yeah, I don't know how much focus's differ from escorts, but i'd recommend an escort donor car. Here's a picture of the red devil

Thanks alot for that dude! Looks a little more awkward than I was hoping for ?

sounds rather more like user error than anything!
a focus is probably the last choice of donor for an engine I would choose, the electrickery on the td di engine, not that Its impossible, but will be a lot of headwork to figure it out.

Thanks alot for that dude! Looks a little more awkward than I was hoping for ? As welshpug stated, most was my own fault. An escort donor and a slightly more serious, and slower, approach would probably yielded better results, as nothing about the swap was particularly difficult.

basically you need at least the following from the donor
Wiring loom Fusebox / Relay box ECU/ECM Engine (I'd also be tempted to take the gearbox also)
Possibly the following: key reader from the column...
Never done it on a ford, but I know the GM Epsilon platform cars do the following Keys are write once - write it to a car...can't reuse the keys on another Column Interface Module (CIM) and the Engine Control Module aka ECU aka ECM both hold a copy of the transponder key details...change CIM, you can copy the info by diagnostic trickery to the new CIM from the ECM and vice versa...change them both at the same time...you need new keys If the car doesn't recognis the key, it won't power up the fuel pump, it probably can be bypassed, (I know there are ways to delete the immobiliser from Epsilon platform cars, but the remapper needs to know what they are doing (And more than a few don't......)
I'd be tempted to drop the engine, gearbox out, use the focus pair (as some identical model gearboxes have diff ratios inside depending on their application - Getrag F23 for example) Get a wiring diagram for both cars - find which wires go from the ignition switch to the engine bay, along with instrument wiring etc and write down what equates to what and CHECK that the wiring colours match those on the donor (I've owned cars where the wiring diagram was wrong and had to find another that did (Cheers haynes for your ever useless manuals) Put the transponder reader and key from the focus donor inside the column to counter the immobiliser (or delete from ECU memory) and make sure the transponder key reader is correctly connected to the underbonnet focus fusebox Replace escort van under bonnet fusebox with Focus underbonnet fusebox, then comes the "fun" of "splicing" the escort van wiring to the focus wiring, go slow, double check every thing...twice... Also check the starter for wear (I removed one recently where it was very gritty feeling due to wear, also replace any diesel rubber leak off / spill off pipes (they go hard and porous eventually)
It *should* be relatively easy...don't get overwhelmed with wires, leave along what you don't need to tamper with, your main focus is the ignition switching, main power to the fusebox, fuel pump power and immobilisier comms wiring
If it doesn't fire...make a brew, do a google, have another look and at worst...sleep on it...been there done that and often you can't see the wood for the trees...problem is right in front of you but you end up not being able to see it due to frustration etc...

You can't use the focus engine without major hassle as the engine is a lot different to what you have as standard the escort engine is an idi engine the focus is a do and ford totally changed the cambelt route and engine mounting position I found this out the hard way if you can weld you could sort it but if you use the mk1 or 2 Mondeo engine it bolts on the old mounts the best way I found for the diesel pump was to just use the original pump and just wind the fuel up makes it a bit smokey off boost but didn't care about that good luck pm me if you need any help

escort or mondeo td engine , use your gearbox with the non turbo flywheel and clutch , use a diesel pump with manual boost compensator , then you wont need an ecu etc , done this conversion in my mk4 escort amongst other cars
