Need a new battery for my MX5, I can get a Halfords sealed battery for £42 or they sell a Yusa one for £72. Or do I go all out and get a Varley or Odessey (£82) racing battery? The car doesn't get used much so spends a lot of time sitting around. I'm also thinking of fitting a battery cut-off switch next to the battery to isolate the battery and act as a theft deterrent and fit an alloy battery box for the race car look Recommendations. Mark

I've bought quite a few batteries off eBay in recent years. Best prices I could find and delivered next day. All from reputable companies both the actual battery manufacturer and seller. One tip is ensure you keep the receipt safe so in the unfortunate event of a problem you can claim off the warrantee.

I just disconnect the battery if the car is going to stand for longer than a day. Killed too many batteries leaving them connected for a month! I have Numax Gold on both cars and they have been great - not expensive either. I bought my last battery via Amazon purely because I had a voucher. Tanya batteries are good, plenty of my club members order from them: www.tayna.co.uk/

If the car isn't used a lot I'd look into one of those maintenance chargers. I buy batteries from a scrappies for a tenner, put them on the maintenance cycle, and get years out of them.
The CTEK MXS 5.0 does everything I need. I don't drive the Viva over the winter so it's laid up for several months. Always fires first time with the CTEK looking after the battery.

Id either go with a calcium battery (more resist to plate breakdown) or an optima yellowtop (not cheap but can be mounted anywhich way and will prob outlive the car as its a deep cycle / starting batt which means it will survive being discharged for longish periods - www.optimabatteries.co.uk/en/6-yellow-top) both along with a decent maintenance charger...

I find that the biggest, gruntiest battery that will fit in the battery cradle is usually a good bet. Beats hand-cranking some heavy old dinosaur in the rain cos the tiny battery it had went flat. I know this doesn't apply to your MX5 but it sure did with my '51 Standard Vanguard back in the '80s. Never had to use the crank handle again after I bought a 15 plate tractor battery.

As above
Get the biggest battery you can that fits
I've used the small solar chargers on my boat and they work very well at keeping a battery topped up
