I wasn't quite sure which section of RR to put this build in, so please move it Mods if I have got it wrong. My good friend Nigel bought this as an unfinished project, it's series 2 Landy running gear (we think) that has been shortened, the axles narrowed and fitted to a custom chassis made of U section steel. As you can see there was quite a bit of finishing to do. The previous owner had made a start on the bodywork! Once back at base no time was wasted as the bulkhead/dash was soon fabricated.. The front end started with a David Brown grill and a Ford Dexta radiator which needed recoring. Something that was curved was needed to go above the grill, so the steel base from a ride on mower was cut up.. With a bit of trimming it looked like a winner Some sign recycling for the bonnet sides. A nice curved top.. Flip fronted Trans tunnel taking shape... and yes the brake fluid reservoir was changed for a much lower one so it didn't get kicked/broken. Until this point the idea was to build the Landy as a tractor until these steel trailer arches were fitted.. Both Nigel and I looked at it and though.."Hhmmm, that looks like it could be a war time aircraft tug" Back panel in. Framework going in to hold a seat and a spare can of fuel. The orange thing under the bonnet is the fuel tank. And finally a coat of paint. For me the best part of this build is watching people trying to work out what it is, most people have said they didn't know Land Rover made tractors and guess it was made about 1944-ish.. The look on their face when they are told it's only 6 months old is priceless

I've no idea why you'd decide to do such a thing, other than 'cos why not, but that looks great! Looks like it's probably rather good fun too.

The Gent who originally started the build was planning on using it for pulling logs out of woods, no idea why he didn't get around to finishing it..

Thanks Brandane, though it's not from my workshop, but very close as in next door It will be a very useful machine once a few running problems are sorted.. We think the fuel tank sealant didn't do it's job too well as bit's of the "coating" keep making their way into the carb. It's also returning about 5 gals to the mile! which needs looking at.

At last a proper new Land Rover, none of that luxury footballer rubbish! That's the first 'tractor' I've seen on here. Well put together and certainly original. I'm going to a vintage tractor meeting next week and this thing would fit in well there next to the Porsche plantation tractor.

That's awesome, I love it I don't know if all the Land Rover parts came from the same donor vehicle, but I do believe that steering wheel is from a Series 3. The original grill certainly was

Wow, the lost and legendary original centre steer LR prototype.
Can I claim my fiver?
It would make an ideal pub-going machine but, if I remember rightly, I said the same about the 6 Wheel Horse as well. Perhaps I should go teetotal?
As usual, brilliant stuff!

Nice contraption!
If the tugs we had up at the airport were anything to go by (and some of them looked to be the vintage this one is aimed at being) it needs a sizeable steel plate on the front. a) it's a big bumper to protect the axle and steering linkage and b) it adds a chunk of weight to the front to stop it from skipping and bouncing if you start hauling something that don't want to move.

It's also returning about 5 gals to the mile! which needs looking at. ooer she's not so economical then lol Lucky there's a tow ball on the rear as you'll have to be towing a fuel bowser to keep the thing going with those types of mpg figures or should I say GPM figures

Love the way that you've got people assuming that Land Rover made a tractor. Love the metal fab work as well. Reckon you should park it in a 'barn', throw a load of sawdust, straw and filler dust at it,band stick it on EvilBay as a 'barnfind' Land Rover tractor. Would love to see the reaction!

Wow! I'm blown away by all your great posts about this green beast.. Thanks Guy's At last a proper new Land Rover, none of that luxury footballer rubbish! That's the first 'tractor' I've seen on here. Well put together and certainly original. I'm going to a vintage tractor meeting next week and this thing would fit in well there next to the Porsche plantation tractor. Yep this one was designed and built by a roll up smoking meat eating bloke not someone famous for singing badly and being so under weight that it looks like she could snap at the slightest sneeze Thanks Creekycrab. That's awesome, I love it I don't know if all the Land Rover parts came from the same donor vehicle, but I do believe that steering wheel is from a Series 3. The original grill certainly was Thanks David, yeah it is a bit of a mix and match of parts.. We did try and find a series 1 steering wheel for it but they are few and far between and rather expensive when one does turn up! Hi George, I had never heard of the center steer prototype until Nigel mentioned it one day, that night a replica popped up on Top Gear! Strange eh.. Yep, I think you did mention the pub in my 6x6 build thread.. Maybe teatotal is the way to go
