I think the best part about the old scrapyards was the fact that you never, ever, had to buy new self-tappers, nuts, bolts, fuses or bulbs.
Actually I never even seen a scrappy over here. They must be somewhere!

I have to go into scrappies as part of my job and the main reason they tell me why they don't let people clamber over the cars now is because a lot of people pinch stuff and just walk out. It's a shame really that they spoil it for others.
The more successful scrappies nowadays strip a car when it comes in and keep the parts they know will sell, weigh in the rest the same day and put the parts on eBay or breakernet. Panels and bumpers don't sell nowadays, even engines don't rush out the door. Gearboxes, alternators, stuff like that.
It's a tough job nowadays as the price of new parts is so low it means that they have to sell lower to compete. I think that modern cars are so reliable that the second hand spares aren't needed as much and also people just don't know how to fix cars any more, they'll just moan about the price the garages charge but never get their hands dirty themselves to save a few quid!!
There are still the old-school guys still being successful but they will die out over the next 20 years I'm afraid as they are finding it more and more difficult to make a few quid.
