So I'm back, after a lot of life changes (leaving ex wife, blah blah) I'm now settled again and my fetishes can continue! Not quite picking up from where I left off, but fast forward to early January this year and I'd owned this mk3 golf vr6 for almost a year Then MOT time was coming, I knew it was a bit crusty so I set to work assessing whether it was worth saving, this is an example of what I found, this was the general condition all round and underneath And so the decision was made, the car had reached the end of its financially viable life Leaving me with all this, obviously it was destined for another car, I knew all this running gear what with owning the car for so long In between this time I bought a mk4 gt tdi to rn about it, I won't bore you with pics of that, they're everywhere and all look the same. Needless to say I got bored of that very quickly and swapped it for another vr... Which had small child storage in the arches, emphasised greatly by my 16x8s... Anyway we'l come back to that one. After that I found a suitable home for all that engine in my garage I wanted to build a sleeper, this seemed the ideal candidate, and had no engine so was a blank canvas. the recovery company kindly took away my old vr shell I was already aware of what the shell was like as I knew the previous owner and what work was needed. Its excellent underneath and bonus being a non kitted shell. It needs a new battery tray and bulkhead panel welding in, which the PO supplied So I got to work cleaning it up ready for welding And then I got bored, or rather I'm struggling for time, hence me doing this mojo boosting thread. I did however do some stuff to the daily. Like nicking the coilovers off the mk2 LOL Put a few choice bits out the garage on it, deep splitter, decat, green spoiler, wind deflectors, probably more stuff I've forgotten Then I aquired half a set of hella quads, I banged them on, mainly because I'd talked my girlfriend into getting her own golf rather than driving mine all the time, and someone had fitted non GTI headlights, which bugged me massively.. Due to a lack of full beam, I stuck some HIDs in, pic for comparison Some pics of her 16v because I secretly like it Then I needed to attend to this, as it was doing my head in! Ten quids worth of wing in the same colour And then I recently aquired a set of complete genuine hellas quads to replace my dingy half non genuine ones And thats where I'm at, please motivate me to get the mk2 done, I have been buying stuff for it, like polybushes all round, braided flexis, grooved discs, 4 lamp grille, rainbow seats (which I might not use), just looking for some 15" 5x100 steelies to roll it on

Go and drop the VR in the mk2 - you won't regret it! I love the sound of mine in my mk2, and it almost looks like Volkswagen fitted it in the bay when it was new. Still space around it. As for your Mk3, I'm liking your choice of mods as well. Properly set up Mk3 VRs need greater recognition than they receive and are lovely daily drivers. One of my old mk3's was in dusky mauve with a mulberry highline leather interior, lowered on collies and fitted with twin Hellas on the front, funnily enough. The whole Volkswagen thing is so addictive isn't it? My first car back in 92 was a mk1 Golf, and I've not been without a Golf of some form for more than a couple of years in the meantime. So, is the Mk2 finished yet?!

I would love a mk3 convertible to drop a vr6 in....the sound and wind in my hair... well my beard actually. Are they straight forward swaps? There is a mk4 drop top for sale locally quite cheap, would the vr6 swap be easy enough or do the electronics complicate things?
Sorry for thread hijack.... your golf looks great.

Ah you mean a 3.5 cab? Vr swap is actually very straightforward in one of those, although I've always used a donor car for all my conversions, I think this is my 5th mk2 engine swap. I bought my first mk2 ten years ago at 18, I've had a squillon dubs but this is mk2 #16. So yea I've got the bug! I love the Mk3 as a daily, although it isn't even that. I have a work van so my car barely gets used, the only one to be used nearly everyday is her 16v. I have a six branch manifold in the garage and I've resisted so hard up to now without putting it on the Mk3, but I have fitted a rear brace and I have a front one yet to fit. It's bouncy, it scrapes, but Daaaaamn does it look good and make a lovely noise

I keep looking at these and thinking that I should really look at a Mk 3 as a viable next project. How do the 16V and the VR compare?

They're very different to drive. The vr is long and powerful through the revs, the 16v is short and quick through the revs. In fact it's almost as quick, but more of a B road car. The vr is more suited to A roads and motorways where higher speeds are you're thing

I also forgot to say, her 16v inherited some parts from my old vr, like the leather steering wheel and gearknob, exhaust system and coilovers

Now is definitely the time to buy a 16v, they've just about past the rock bottom prices now people are breaking them left right and centre, they're certainly starting to appreciate in value, and let's be honest, they're what the gti should have been

Right, time for a beer while I share with you what I've been doing for the past 2 hours... So I removed the passenger front wing for access (I've got a pair of brand new ones anyway) and removed the rotten battery tray Just a quick clean up and the new tray can be welded in, maybe tomorrow night, if I can be bothered LOL. Here's a better pic of the next bit to sort, the offending bulkhead panel where carpet can be seen

So now all the welding is done, I've bought a mk4 clutch pedal, master cylinder and push fit pipe. Thats the mk2 brake pedal at the top, mk4 clutch pedal assembly in the middle, and the mk2 clutch pedal I chopped off. I stupidly cut off a bracket which the bottom of the steering column bolts to, so I need to weld that back on. Here you can just about see where I've dented in the chassis leg for the crank pulley Aaaaaaand the bit I've been most looking forward to... the first coat of white has landed! You can just see the master cylinder holes, the middle hole is a funny shape due to the mk4 MC

So here's what I've been doing for the past week or so. I finished painting the bay I cleaned the mk3 Emptied the back of the mk2 out I still need to sell/get rid of some of this stuff. There you can see some of my parts stash I've been saving for the mk2, rear beam polybushes, polybushed front wishbones, grooved discs, red braided flexis, 4 lamp grille etc. Then I let it see daylight for the first time in weeks Tidied up the garage. Yes, this is tidy Then back on the mk2. Mk4 master cylinder and pedal fitted Clutch pedal might need some tweaking, but the brake master wasn't connected at this point, which does pull the pedal back. This is as far as I've got with the engine bay, this was a great motivational point. Loom is in, plugged into the fusebox, although it does need some trimming of loom tape to get plugs where they need to be. Then last night something exciting happened. Well exciting for me, probably an anti climax for some. 16" of new beetleness. I wanted 15s really, but these came up on my doorstep cheap enough, and are surprisingly hard to get hold of. I'l need some 195/45s to sit right but they'l give me the sleeper image I'm going for and hide my brakes. In between all this fun I squeezed in a little mission I've been putting off for ages. I bought a pair of OMP strut braces off facebook for £40, bolted the rear on promptly at the time but wasn't in any rush to be drilling holes in my shell. On Sunday morning, I grew a pair... And that brings me up to date. I did go in the garage earlier full of enthusiasm ready to start making up brake pipes, to discover my male unions are too small to screw into my master cylinder. Poo. So I came back in LOL

My daily is a TDi mk4, and after being taken for a spin in a vr6 I really fancy one now.
I also like the idea of one in a mk2 shell.

I had that gt tdi 110 for about 2 months, 60mpg is all well and good. But for the small amount of time I spend in my own car smiles per gallon are much more important to me :-)

Been a while, and lots has happened. After I'd stuck the 6 branch mani on the engine, i popped it in (sounds easy yes?) I borrowed a diesel pressure washer from work, its been off the road since last november and up until march it had been left outside, so off came the moss You may notice the lack of mk3s on our drive, well thats because me and "the boss" have upgraded. She has the lovely moon mile 1.8t mk4 with the lushest leather recaros I've ever placed my , and i got an S3. Then we went all posh and got our own plates The plan has changed somewhat for the mk2. I considered selling it due to the s3 barely getting used and 2 road cars seemed a tad pointless. Anyways i got back in touch with a schoolmate whom i havent seen for 10 years. Hes been doing open trackdays for some time and while its something i always wanted to do, never pursued it. So, the plan. Rip out anything thats not needed and weighs more than a pubic hair, fit an exhaust thats not over 102dB, put a bucket seat in it, do a few open track days at cadwell down the road, and if it performs alright I'll enter some sprint events. So it began... This is where I'm at. A few stray plugs to home, and it can be turned over. I've put the fuel tank on and put in the mk3 tank/pump loom, I've got a stainless exhaust with a single tail, and this weekend should bring me a bucket seat and coilovers... Maybe even get it turning over
