Ran a mk2 V6 for a few years and loved it. Mpg was around the 30 and surprisingly good on a long run though that dipped a little after I changed the exhaust for a Janspeed one, as it sounded ace at higher revs! I was warned at the time about head gaskets going at 100k, but had no bother with mine and it was north of 150k when I sold it. One of the best tow cars I've had too.

A mate has one nudging 300k... And he's done most of that himself. Regular servicing and letting it warm fully before booting it.

Great engine but make sure it's been well serviced.

Isn't it the same engine as an X-Type? If so, they last longer in those than the electrics can!

Only real issues these have are the IMRC which controls the secondary butterflies in the intake They get gummed up if not exercised regularly And some water pumps had plastic blades that sometimes fell off resulting in temperatures rising
Any that have lasted till now should have had those sorted though Plenty of spares in the Cougar's too

I wouldn't know. I would not consider a Mondeo as a main tow car though due to them being too small and under-powered. Are they not also front wheel drive? That in itself is a recipe for lots of tyre smoke and not moving due to weight transference front to rear under towing load lifting the front end of the car. That said I've done a lot of towing with FWD vehicles and got away with it most of the time but it is certainly not ideal.

I had a T plate one from new as a company hack. Only issue I had was MPG - I averaged only 22 over 3 years but then I didn't do motorway mileage. It was THE car that made me change to diesel lol

Even our car trailer only takes an escort size motor tops, and the weight of the six pot up front meant I never had the traction issues we did with my dads 1.8 or even the 75 I replaced it with. In fact I don't remember ever getting stuck with it, including across fields one very soggy January!

I run a mk3 v6 as a daily. Imo it doesn't have the performance to match the mpg but is a decent enough cruiser. If you get one check carefully for vac leaks as they can be a nightmare to locate. Oh and whoever thought needing to remove the manifold to get to the spark plugs was a good idea needs a slap.

I think the bodywork is more of an issue than the motor - check for rot.
