One of these is up for sale near me, I've heard mixed reports about the transmission. Anyone owned one or heard of one doing a high milage? I umderstand they aren't any good for putting big power through but this is only an 1800 carb.

As far as what I can see (google) many people opt for audi haldex systems to take power, the standard syncro is a bit weak compared to the rallye stuff. People use the synchro's from the mk3 VR's to take power. Though if the car came with an 1800 engine on a synchro setup I'm sure it will be fine if diff, gearbox oils and CVs are serviced.

We had one, well the missus did for several years. Not very quick for an 1800, but was around 180000 when we sold it, still on original engine, box and diff as far as we knew.
Was always told the running gear isn't up to much if you run a fair bit more power through it.
One thing I will through in is that the bloke who bought ours had owned 3 or 4 before, he was vw specialist, he said they rust a lot quicker than a normal mk2 golf? He reckons the syncro wasn't treated for rust prevention aswell? Not sure how true that is? But I must admit our Syncro was the Newest MK2 we had on a G Plate, and the B reg we had before was much better nick, and also the E reg 16v we had after was better also.
