Investment cars for the future?

Hey all just a random thought, I've got a small bit of spare money and a few cars I'm selling so will be having enough for a project(investment) I've now got a double garage and room for a few cars so my collection can grow again!

I've got a 1976 Mini Clubman Estate which has been converted into a van. I've also got a 1977 Toyota Corona. I'm planning on keeping these for the foreseeable future. But they are modified as future value wasn't really a consideration they are a hobby that I enjoy.

But my next project id like to actually do a decent restoration job, perhaps not concourse but will be standard rather than modified and I'm hoping it will be worth money in a few years.

Basically what car do you suggest I should look at getting next? I love mk1 escorts but they seem to have hit the big bucks already.

I know it's a hard question and no one can foresee the future but what do you think is going to be the next big thing?! I mean minis have gone up in value a lot! (My first about 8 years ago was £120 and the same condition now you can add another 0!) and ofcourse mk1 escorts have soared in price.

I love rear wheel drive. I love Japanese. But anything considered datsun 260z etc would be cool.

Mini 1275 GT .

I am sure you know that 70s mini's are rocketing , and will continue to do so , getting towards cooper s money .

A datsun would be great , its just finding one that is not snapped up by dealers , and having the pockets to do a top notch job.

A sierra RS cosworth would be good , but your looking at 8k plus for a project when one comes up , and to make good money you will have to shell out a lot again. And it has to be clean [ no hpi etc ] to sell for profit .

There is stuff out there but you have to weigh in how much you are willing to do if you expect a return , and the fact actual restoration for collectors mean they expect originality = more money .

I think a nice e30 325sport will be a good investment,they are already on the rise now but will rise in price even more in a few years when rust and the drifters have taken their toll and survivors are fewer.

I'm hoping early Audi A8s (proper V8 Quattro ones) will go up sharply as I've just bought a cheap one.....

My guess would be an early Subaru imprezza, but would need to be completely original uk car, can see them following the sporty fords for desirability.

I'd second the E30. W124 Merc estate and coupes are another. they've already gained in value from a few years ago.

Jaguar X300s are still a steal, even the Supercharged XJR goes for little money and they're surprisingly well screwed together.

Vauxhall Nova's can go for silly money already, do a good resto on a GTE/GSI and I think they'll be hitting 5 figures within 10 years

You've missed the boat on E30's, decent OEM 325 Sports are £10k and up. As M3 E30s have gone stratospheric and out of the reach of most of us the 325 Sport has become the go to performance E30, which in turn has knocked up the 318iS. Loads of lemons disguised as minters, either rotten underneath or not genuine Sports on the log book, so see a £5k car buyer beware.

My tactic would be to look at 90s stuff, as mentioned the E36 M3 and the Impreza, but also the Mitsi Lancer and the E36 318iS. W124's are still cheap, and just brilliant pieces of engineering. The 7 seater estates are timeless cars, they don't look out of place on today's roads, and they're also useful tools for load lugging.

I'll go leftfield on this one, an early Skoda Octavia vRS. Came out in the late 90s I believe, possibly early 00s. Always fancied one for some reason.

Another thought an unmolested E36 328 would be good as so many are being turned into track day cars, same could probably said about a MX-5 MK1. Lotus Elan the front wheel drive one.

I would go for the e36 m3 aswell actually . When was the last time anyone spotted one , let alone in good condition . I'm betting prices will go up even further in 3 years or so .

E36 cabrios are looking prettier by the day, they're ageing really well, and can be bought for chump change right now. Lad near me has a mint 328i cab in dark blue and it looks gorgeous. Many are starting to look tatty so you can bet your bottom dollar a good, clean original car will be a good medium / long term buy.

Not sure whether the xj8 jaguar will be an investment bought mine cheap, but wouldn't like to say if it's an investment, wish I'd bought a triumph stag when I had the chance, there going through the roof now

205 GTIs have gone mad in the last few years, 306 GTI and Rallye are still cheap but I would guess would go the same way.

There's a thread on Pistonheads of somebody who bought a E36 328 cab for peanut and is bringing it back up to condition, interesting read.

Depending on budget early 6 cylinder Aston DB7's are tipped to be a good buy.

Not RWD but 90's spec XR2's an XR3's are peanuts at the moment. Easy to source parts once you've got a hold on the rust and sure to go up in value especially if Ford ever recycles the XR badge which they're bound to do in twenty years to cash in on the misty eyed!
