So almost a year ago, after over a year of looking for a new project, i stumbled across this little rare gem.
Shes a '91 Maserati 222se.
2 Door (coupe)
2 wheel drive (rear)
2 litre engine (uk spec 2.8l)
I have a love for the unusual and obsure, and so after a little background research I gambled on it and went and picked her up.
She drove pretty well, previous owner had had the engine out and sorted all the electrics - usual Italian notoriety! Solid book of history, and really just needed the body work tidying up...
Original number plate, talk about tempting the inevitable...
Then after having her just a week, I went off and did the obligatory mid 20's travelling - proving the Italians really are reliable... 4000+ miles in my daily round Europe and she never missed a beat!
Got home early October, quick jump on the leads to wake up the dead battery, and she was alive again!
So with winter fast approaching it was time to start thinking about where i was going with this project...
Lows were always going to happen, but there has to be a limit, as the long term plan has to be to be able to put her back to complete standard...
But the main plan was paint, air, wheels and straight piped exhaust, I want all the V6 noise!!!
Then Bad happened. Something went pop on a casual drive... Initial thoughts was blown turbo, as these are notorious for it. So she sat on the drive wrapped up feeling sorry for herself until the hectic month of December was out of the way and i had a bit of time to assess and plan the rebuild.
Realistically there was no way i was going to be pulling the engine out on the drive to check the turbos over (wonderful italian design) so I made the call to a specialist company and got her booked in to have a full checkover, and serivce/mot whilst she was there.
I got lucky. Turbo hadn't gone, one of the intercoolers had knackered itself, split and blown a pipe... so replacement cooler fitted, full serivce and MOT done, only advisory being corrosion near front OS arch, which I was aware about anyway, so all in all the car proved itself to be Italian and dodgy, but solid at the same time!
So now that she was back fully working again I started hunting down the items I knew I would be needing for the respray; new badges, window seals etc etc, old rare classic cars are a nightmare!
Made a few phonecalls and visited a couple of bodyshops before settling for one almost right on my doorstep. Shes getting completely stripped down and having all the rust cut out, determined to not take any short cuts and get a finish worth paying for...
Will update with more photos once I get the memory stick back from the body shop, but heres a couple of progress pics:
So thats pretty much how she sits as of the middle of May, just gotta get the screens out and then shes almost ready to go under the gun.
My original aim of being ready for players classic is definitely not going to happen, but such is life!
Saw this on instagram the other day, its only a photoshop but I do have a soft spot for them!
