I've got 3 compressors. 150 ltr Ingersol Rand, 100ltr ABAC and a small 10ltr obscure German made. The larger ones are belt drive and far quieter than the smaller which is direct drive. If noise level is important then go for belt drive every time.

I wouldnt bother with those at that price , you can get a equivilant clarke from machine mart for a little more. Then you have a company to deal with , warrenty and access to spares . It has slightly less cfm [ 9.5 ] but should be fine - that thing may not even flow that much !

yes the belt drive ones are a lot more than i want to pay, i have about £150-maybe 200, the one i have now is 25 ltr, and its quite noisy, but its not got an air filter, so maybe it should be a bit quieter.
If the others are as loud as the one i have that is ok, i don't use it every day and its in the garage so its not really that loud. Just don't want to annoy the neighbours.
I was thinking about it and the air gun i have will be a lot louder outside than the compressor itself LOL!

I think there is one for less than a £10 more . I know i would be happier personally with something i can get replaced easily or repaired .
Who knows , it might be good but thats a risk you will have to take .

If you're looking at the Clarke ones from Machine mart then buy the same bit of kit cheaper from here www.ukhs.tv/Workshop/Air-Line-AccessoriesBranded as Wolf they are exactly the same as the Clarke ones with one exception, they have Euro fittings instead of UK ones. Not a problem as the connections simply unscrew and are interchangeable, plus the air kit from Lidl / Aldi comes with Euro fittings anyway. When I was looking I went into Machine Mart and asked if they'd match the Wolf prices since they are identical compressors, the manager was really snooty about it, which not only lost him that sale but a lot more since.

Unless you're in desperate need of a compressor how about holding on until aldi/lidl have them in stock, have found their kit good value for money. Another option is, a member on here often pops up offering deals on compressors, a search should bring up some details. Ttfn Glenn

Wolf compressors are 100% Chinese. No relation to the old industrial quality Wolf Tools of the past - simply the same name. The adverts can be misleading in they imply British but what they really mean is British firm who import everything they sell ! Nothing wrong with them for DIY use as long as you know what you are getting.

I recently bought a "Wolf Dakota" 90L 3hp belt-drive compressor as a backup for my main 3-phase workshop jobby and am simply blown away (pun intended) by how quiet and capable it is. Think I only paid around the 200-quid mark, delivered, so even more impressed. Almost everything you're likely to buy for a workshop these days will be from china, and in my opinion, it's simply not a worry. Well, certainly not at this price....

Most of the stuff in the Machine Mart catalogue is foreign made kit just painted blue with a Clarke badge stuck on it. If you're looking to buy at that end of the market is pays to look around for the identical thing, made in the same factory, probably shipped over in the same container, just painted a different colour and sold for much less that MM prices.

Whilst I'll agree with that also remember any compressor with Clarke label but painted blue Hammerite is a completely different machine to the other blue models and probably EU built with Italian compressor.

I have read a couple of times that the Aldi compressors are made by Wolf. I have the 24l Aldi one and it's OK for basic stuff but it will not run most air tools - including the ones they sell at the same time like the air shears. I doubt the 50l one they sell would run them for long either. If I was buying again, I would not buy less than a 100l compressor.
If you register with Machine Mart they will eventually send you a code for 10% or occasionally 20% off Clarke gear. May take a while to get a code though.
The mig welding forum UK is a great source of advice on compressors with lots of recommendations and a For Sale forum that often has compressors.

Hi, if you have got one of the smaller ones keep an eye on Ebay for receivers being sold with broken compressors. Which you can discard and connect their receiver to yours to increase the capacity. Or even empty calor cylinders once washed out.

Or even empty calor cylinders once washed out. Colin That's a good idea - my 50 litre one does most of what I need it to but it does have to run a fair bit when spraying. It's not a problem and for my needs the 50 litre compressor is more versatile than the 100 litre machine. I can see why the advice is to buy as big as you can get though. I have a few empty 7kg calor cylinders lying around and one of those could be set up remotely. How do you connect your compressor to a calor gas cylinder?
