I've already managed to delete this thread once! Evening all, I'm driving to Barcelona this week and I had bookmarked a thread of suggested routes from very recently, but now I can't find it! Can anyone suggest any Paris free routes from Calais to Barcelona please? I'd like to hit the Milau Viaduct but I'm not too bothered about anything else. In return, these could be pictures, or the whole lot could die again! Thanks

I've done a lot of that route (as far as the Spanish Border) by following google maps on "avoid tolls". It passed some nice looking places and we just wanted to get there without being too bored and see a bit of France as we went.
With hindsite, perhaps I should have forked out the few quid to go over the Viaduct instead of driving down into the valley and up the other side, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Ah well.

If you're going in the opposite direction to the signs for Paris you're going in the right direction! (I'm not actually joking).
Done the run a few times and my biggest advice is, if you have to get there in under 3 days pays your money and take the toll roads.

I drive up and down and across Europe a lot.
As with the other suggestions I really recommend avoiding Paris.
Calais Reims Troyes Dijon (If you have time you could take a loop out around lake Geneva and lake Annecy before hitting Lyon - Stunning) Lyon (After Lyon I would personally head to Montpellier but if you want to head to Milau then you can cross country to Albi etc and then come back down)
As an aside I was staying in Gaillac (near Albi) a few years ago and drove to Milau. You really need to take the time to drive down under it and also cross it.
All in all, sounds like a great trip

I did this journey for easter, as I requested in the other thread links above. I eventually went for a Paris route (via the Preriferique) and it wasn't too bad. It was certainly quicker than half of the M25 both ways!!! Besides maniacal motorcyclists, Paris is not scary at all for a London driver, so don't let people scare you. Just bring a decent GPS.
The route I took was as follows:
Calais > Arras > Paris > Orleans (break for lunch) > Bourges > Clermont Ferrand (stop for night)
Next day:
Clermont-Ferrand > Millau Viaduct > Beziers > Perpignan > Girona > Barcelona.
Each day was approximately 6 hours of driving at mostly 130kmh, but I decided to spread it over 2 days each way. Hotels were around 30€ per night, and tolls around 90€ each way. Stop in the towns for fuel, as it's much cheaper. In my Corolla, it was a very pleasant journey and very smooth throughout. The miles just sail away with a decent ipod playlist and good company. Any other questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them.

Well, I've done this now so I guess I can update the thread! We did, Reims > Dijon > Lyon > Barcelona Took 15 hours on the way there due to an unplanned de-tour and accidentally going through the middle of Lyon at 5pm . The trip back was much better at only 12 hours and no traffic at all!
