I've been generally happy with the couple of times I've had to call the RAC out but their response times haven't been amazing
When the wipers died on my MGB in torrential rain, they did send a guy out in a van who luckily had some glass fuses which fixed the problem for all of 5 seconds! (I later found that the wiper motor had come unmounted and the extra flop in the system was blowing the fuse)
After a second fuse blew, I think he gave up and called for a flatbed as he couldn't tow it, it got dark by the time the flatbed turned up but they were nice enough guys and got me back home.. eventually!
Another time when I broke down in the Saab on a busy roundabout, I called them and was told it would be an hour or so.. In the meantime, some police chaps came along, pushed me off the road where I was then able to reattach the boost hose that had popped off and got on my way I think the RAC called me back to say they were about 15mins away as I was driving off haha
