My wife only has a license to drive automatics as she's lazy and couldn't be arsed to learn how to drive a real car when she came to the UK and did her test over here. Now as I understand if I stick 'L' plates on my car and I'm sitting in the passenger seat, she is treated as having a provisional license for a manual car so she can drive, now her insurance on her car is fully comp. and DOES allow her to drive any car with the owners permissions, is this enough to cover her for a manual car?

she specifically DOES have cover to drive other cars with owners permission, yes third party only... its more the fact that her license is for automatic and my car is manual.
I'm trying to prod her into taking a test on a manual, would certainly be useful if she could drive my car for the purposes of teaching her how to...
I suspect 'L' plates on an IS200 would certainly make a traffic officer want to stop it and check it out... LOL

You need to ask the insurers. It is possible the driving of other cars third party may depend on holding a valid full licence. It is not unknown for insurance companies to put detail like that deep in the small print.

Just to echo others comments because she would be a learner she will have to inform her insurer that she was leaning to drive a manual as her insurance in based on the fact she had an auto licence.
I'm not sure on the licence side as its changed again recently but check that her licence states she has manual car learner provision, she might have to also take another theory test so its worth checking with DVLA or an approved body that has the upto date info.

She is not insured on her own as she doesn't have a manual licence.I would ring a driving instructor and ask them what she needs for a manual licence. It might be just a couple of lessons to refresh her for test driving and book a test. It will probably be cheaper to do that than have her added on your policy with a provisional manual.
