Anyone done this? I've got something in the pipeline that's a bit of a break from the norm for me.. it's a factory restoration of a not particularly old, or particularly rare car. It's the touches with stuff like this that makes them though.. dealer stickers and number plates, that kind of thing. How would one go about finding the original deal for a vehicle? The plate ends XOD if that helps, it's a 1990 car. As penance for doing a "how do I" type thread that's so vague..

This is an interesting thread which I shall be watching. Bar buying a car with plenty of history I think the only way to do it would be to track down where the car was registered and see what dealers were about then. However, even that is not a failsafe way.
The plate ending in OD however would insinuate that the car was first registered in Exeter.

It's predictably for me a VW Golf. After my last Rover, and my past experiences with them, it's a marque I'll avoid unless a suitable pre SD1 pops along for tuppence.

Don't suppose we've anyone local who can tell me what VW dealers were in Exeter in 1990?

I stole the pictures off Google Images I've no idea who the dealer was for the car I'm looking at. I just fancy doing a "totally stock" one in my lifetime is all...

Ah, well for most cars you have to either know the history, hope for a sticker in the window, or decode the registration to where it was registered and then search for dealers in that area that sold that make of car.

With older BMC/BL cars you can get a Heritage Certificate that may have details of the dealer it was originally supplied to. You'd have to find out if VW have (and will share) similar records - if they still exist.
You can still request a past ownership history from the DVLA I think? I can't remember which form it is. If you were lucky enough with such a search you might get the address of the first owner and could then try and trace the most local dealership.
Or I think you're stuck with the sugggestions above, of finding the dealership(s) closest to the registration area.

Google tells me VW Exeter is Mann Egerton, though it appears to be owned by Inchcape. So you're on the right track with that middle pic of yours!
I'd dial 01392 338204 and see what they can tell you, though I won't be surprised if it's something along the lines of them not holding records that long, no-one here worked here back then, we moved sites 15 years ago . . . etc. etc.

Yes, the V888 is the way to go, that will generally include a copy of the original application for a registration number which is filled in by the supplying dealer.
There's another thread on this site somewhere where people were posting photos of old dealer window stickers and tax disc holders, to help in getting them made. I'd love to get mine, but the new owners of one of them didn't have any information and the other has just disappeared.

Hi mate, even easier. Phone your local vw dealer, speak to service or parts, give them your reg and/or chassis number and they can tell you who the car was supplied by. Hth Andy

A few of the cars I have owned in the past come with dealer location maps in the handbook folder.if that of any help. Clues from where the car was registered and where the first owner lived should narrow things down.
I tried to get some replica plates made up and despite supplying an image to print of the whole number plate they still made them too small. I have a thing about new style plates on older cars, they look silly with the narrow font. Not sure of an easy way round that though unless it's old enough to have pressed alloy or plastic letter plates still though.

for the british cars (leyland, rover, morris, land rover, triumph, mg etc etc) BMIHT can tell you which dealer the car was issued to from the chassis number
alternatively you can fill out V888 form, pay a fiver, youll get a pack of photocopies of all the V5 at change of ownerships plus copy of original application for license (which wouldve been done by the dealership)

I have a thing about new style plates on older cars, they look silly with the narrow font. Not sure of an easy way round that though unless it's old enough to have pressed alloy or plastic letter plates still though. When we used to run company cars with private plates, we had some number plates made up by a local sign company. They had loads of logos in the background, all sorts of stuff that led to them being removed because they were over the top. Point is, though, they were just signs so I would imagine someone like that would use the correct period font, add whatever logos you like. Even the pressed alloy plates often have a newer font that's slightly narrower than original - one on my "to do" list is to find some way to replicate the reflective white and yellow background then I can refurbish my original pressed alloy plates.

What's the correct font for a 1990 numberplate then?
