when I was 17 I bought a 2001 clio 1.2 16v. It was group 3 insurance back then, but as insurance in NI is rediculously steep, it was insured under my da's name with me as a named driver. Those wee clios can be picked up for under £1k now, and would certainly do the job as cheap motoring for a year to bring down the premium.
And then everyone around here went through the 306 d-turbo stage. They were group 5 insurance. They were the cheap way into having to a little bit of cheap tuning. standard have 90bhp, but a turn of the max fuel screw, and upping the boost will get you about 120bhp. The engine has minimal electrics too, so they're great for learning mechanicing. I think i was out in my own name on the 306's, and paid around £1250 first year with admiral, then about £840 with elephant the next year at about 20 year old

A couple of people are referring to how they drove a car around on their parent's insurance and how that was lots cheaper.
Remember, if you're the main driver covering the most miles in the car, you need to be listed as such on the policy, regardless of whose name the policy is in. I don't see how that would necessarily be cheaper as I'd expect the insurer to rate the premium on the youngest driver however it's arranged.
In these situations I like to refer to the tale from my early days in insurance broking where the loss adjuster turned up to find a housewife's Fiesta sitting on 17s and with 6x9s on the parcel shelf. Oh, and a newer standard Fiesta next to it. Needless to say, my bosses at the time had a fight getting that one paid out as it appeared her 17 year old son was more than just a casual driver of 'her' car.

If you add an older driver to a younger driver's insurance (ie they are the main driver and the insurance is in their name) then it usually lowers the premium. That is totally different from a younger driving a car on their parents' insurance.

I had a Land Rover Defender 110 insured for £1300 with zero no claims at 19. I'm afraid I don't remember the insurer as that was about 8 years ago!

I'm 17 and insured on a Scimitar GTE for £1800 with all mods declared. GoGirl is the insurer Of all the quotes I've had so far GoGirl comes back as the cheapest evertime. I did try taking the curse word out of my Son but he didn't bite, in fact he said he'll wear a dress if it means he can get cheaper insurance. He isn't 17 until next Feb but he should have his licence by March as long as he can get a test date so he is going to be champing at the bit to get mobile.

That is a hell of a difference. My post code is BS35 not Baghdad. Jeez.

Hmm it might well be because I've actually owned the car since I was 14 and insurers like if you've owned the car a while. Scimitar SS1s are cheap to insure. 1300, 1400 and 1600 CVHs are between insurance group 6 and 8. The 1.8 turbo is still only group 13 or 14

Sorry about the confusion, I am insured on a GTE rather than an SS1, but we spent ages getting the quote down. SS1s are definitely the better starter car. I would be driving one if I owned one but my GTE is the only one of my cars that works

In 2006 when I passed my driving test, I was insured on a K reg BMW 520i. My car with the policy In my own name, dad as a named driver. £620 for the year. That was with RAC. Had two years of favourable insurance with them at the time on various things including a Honda Accord 2.0i and a Cavalier 1.8. They drew the line at insuring me on a T reg Vectra SRi mind (and it was only the 2.0! I can drive a RWD BMW with no experience but a Vectra with bigger alloys and a spoiler is a no no).
I don't know if RAC still do insurance and I remember them jacking their prices up by horrendous proportions in 2008 so I went to More Than and by that point I was paying £900 on a diesel, M reg Mondeo which was absolutely ridiculous. Couldn't be doing with these prices people are quoting!

My first car, at age 17 was a 56 MG Magnette ZA. In the old groupings it was a group 3 car loaded to group 4 by its twin SU carbs - a "sports saloon". A years TPFT insurance, in my own name cost the princely sum of £34! By an odd coincidence, this was exactly my fitter's take home pay for a week so this is a real world bench mark. I would say a modern equivalent to the MG would be an Orion Ghia so you would expect a years insurance on one of these for a 17YO to be in the region of £300 (rough mechanics take home pay today) YEAH RIGHT!!!!! Anyone foolish enough to try this would face a quote (when the brokers stopped laughing) nearer £3000 which means that insurance for young drivers has gone up, in REAL terms, by something in the order of 1000% in the last 45 years!!!!! Young drivers today (I have 5 in my household) have my deepest sympathy, they are simply being priced out of car ownership by greedy insurance companies since I can't see that they represent even double the risk they did in 1971 let alone 10 times the risk they are paying for!!!!I'm getting cross just thinking about it! Rant over!

I paid 1600 for a Mini (classic) at 17.
All you can do is phone around, try lots of different cars, you might be surprised. 4 years on it costs me 1600 to insure a seat arosa 1.0, and the same amount for an xj6 or a porsche 944. Its always a case of trying stuff out, you cant assume anything.
I must add this is 'go compare' try outs. I'm paying 400 for a 2a land rover at the moment and my renewal on a mini is £390.
