So this car ticks all the boxes; classic? yes volkswagen? yes rare? yeah, they are pretty uncommon GT? yes Cool? hell yes Daily? you bet your sweet A** it is So ive wanted a retro daily vw for a while now, i had been driving a modern audi a4 for a year, whilst is was a great car to drive, it had no character. so i wanted to swap/sell it to get something fun. so after a bit of pestering of every one who had a moted retro/classic vw for sale worth about the same as my audi, some one finally agreed to swap there mk2 golf with me. sadly that never happened. but never dishearten i kept looking, and i stumpled upon this beaut on gumtree, we quickly came to an agreement. 5 days later and the car was mine. here she is out side some service station. shes not perfect, a few little surface rust patches, scratches in the paint but structually she straight as an arrow. (the mandatory petrol station shot) its got a 1.8 peirsburg carbed engine new shocks and brakes cambelts been doneclutch has been doneshe drives really well and does have some pull to herso the plans are; get it lower and sort out that rake. tidy up the engine bay, i want to make it look really clean in there unlike the spaghetti junction it is at the moment. swap the carb for a weber one. tidy up the exterior and remove the small rust patches.
swap over the alloys, I'm currently stuck between 2 options, these, which are the same as 'red panther'. or these, let me know what you think. oh yeah, i forgot the most important part, ENJOY. the smiles per gallon on this car are fantasic. this is going to be a fairly slow thread as i have limited funds so upgrades are going to take time.

I wouldn't bother lowering it, the general consensus on the rocco forum is they handle best as standard

I learned lift off over-steer in one of these on an RAF base. I think Guz ended up owning it. It looked a lot like this one.

So whilst this car is mainly about positives, it does have a few a negative points. The biggest one being the tenancy to judder and cut out at the least convenient times, such as up hill on a motor way. Restarting the car fixes the issue till it happens again. It doesn't just cut out up it, it does it on down hill and flats. I'm 99% sure it's a fuel issue. So I change the filter, the old one had crud in it. I then looked in the fuel tank and saw this As the fuel tank it's self seems rust free, it must be coming from the filler neck (known fault with these cars) I reckon the fuel pick up is getting partial blocked by these bits of rust. I also think the vapour pot has corroded which also restricts the fuel line. I reckon it's these two together restricts the fuel flow so much the engine dies. And once the pressure is relived from the lines due to the pump being off,I reckon all the crud settles to the bottom of the tank and vapour pot till it repeats it's self. I'm gonna replace the vapour bottle and dissect the old one to see what it's like inside and drain the tank, empty and put a fine wire mesh between the filler neck and tank to stop more rust getting into it. Hopefully this cures the issue. On a light note, here's the new rims for the car (just need to get some Road legal rubbers now)

Lovely, I think the star mags will look cool on this. Can you get some ally pipe made to the same shape as your filler pipe? Otherwise maybe you can sleeve some fuel proofed silicone pipe inside. Both these two options may bot be required if these parts are still available

Lovely looking car, an ideal DD. Just sold mine 6-months ago & I'm really missing it, was a proper go-cart! Good luck with its ownership.

been a few weeks since i've updated this, shes has been used daily but has had some issues...... i did change the vapour pot and found it full of sand. something which surprised me. easy swap and got the replacement piece off ebay. since changing it over the car has only juddered and cut out once (an improvement. also quick tip, when moving fuel pipes in the engine bay, make sure you put them back where they belong. i kinda left one of the pipes a bit to close to the alternator pulley and it some what munched through it. luckily i caught it before it went all the way through. pipe has since been replaced. ignore the metal swarf as this was but there after cutting the pot open but you can clearly see the sand/grit like substance in the pot, which probably shouldnt be there. i've also had to replace the alternator as mine conveintly died at work. i changed the battery first hoping that was the issue as it was cheaper than the alternator, sadly it wasnt, but it was old and was gunna need replacing soon anyways. so i had to get a replacement on from ebay. works great, charges the battery, car always starts first time etc etc but my bloody battery warning light keeps coming one (something it never did before)and I'm unsure why (done voltage checks with loads on and off and getting around 13.5 volts) due to real life reasons ive had to sell the ats cups. but all is not lost, the rocco is sitting on some new rims. no, i havent lost it, these were a 1/4 prices of what i paid for the CUPS so i would of been rude not to take them. originally i didn't like the purple, but after seeing it on the car for a few days it has started to grow on me.however the sticker bombing has gone. what do you guys think? I'm gonna add a poll to help me decide the colour of them. either keep them purple or spray them a dark bronze.

I've voted other, my thinking is black spokes & centre with the inner being red same as the car. Bit of a faff I know but reckon it'd look cool with the red popping through the spokes.

I think they should go silver really, it will help them look better, are they tsw Evo r? I used to have a mk2 gtx, loved it, I though mine handled nicely just on lowering springs. I ha the original 14" wheels in mine though.

I'd go with silver rim and black centre; bit of masking needed but would look pretty good I reckon.

It just sitting a bit to high for me atm. Were you wheels the snow flakes? As I quite like those

What about gold wheels, bare with on this one (it'd have to be bright) Newera imports had an r33gtr in red with some cracking gold wheels, I thought it looked nice.
