I do know of at least three in-use Tagoras in the UK. Neither of the owners would even consider selling, mind. An example of the vaguaries of dvla and there information, but by any standard those are probably rarer than many supercars, since there's hundreds of veyron kicking about Ttfn Glenn Ps my 1999 Daewoo nubira is getting pretty rare now

Unfortunately, even us "enthusiasts" aren't immune to the effects of the real world. As an example, my mate and I went up to Santa Pod for the Mopar Nats last weekend. It's a good two-and-a-half hour drive from the south coast, each way. If I take my RX-7 I have to fill it up with petrol at least once, depending how full the tank it to start with... costing at least £60, more like £80. So, between us we've got two RX-7s, a Mercury Cougar, Opel Commodore, BMW 525 and two Mopars in states of dismantlement. What do we drive up there in? Yep, a one-year old sub-1-litre Ford Fiesta It's big enough for two fat middle-aged blokes, comfortable for the five-hour journey, pokey enough to keep up with motorway traffic, it's on a lease-to-buy scheme that costs peanuts per month and you get the option to keep it at the end (or swap to another new model with all the benefits of no MOT for three years etc)... and most importantly, it cost less than the price of the admission ticket in petrol, about £25 . That's the reality of it. In these days of the squeezed middle, who has the money to chuck well over £100 away on a single day out when you could spend £35 instead? And because that's a bit depressing, have a photo of a nice old Barracuda doing a wheelie

Firstly, let me just say... Ooh i love that Barracuda ^^^ Secondly... If nobody bought new cars: 1) All the factories would close and the workers would be on the dole. 2) Income tax would have to go up to 80%, probably. 3) All the old car would eventually become VED exempt thus other taxes would have to go up even more to compensate. 4) The existing old cars would become more expensive. Good news for the sellers not so much for the buyers. 5) Some old cars would still need to be scrapped because of crashes, terminal rust etc so the amount of cars would decrease. therefore further increase the value of the remaining ones. 6) Used car dealers would now be cock-a-hop having a control of an ever decreasing resource in a seller's market. 7) All the umemployed ex car workers become mime artists, human statues and other annoying types of street performer's (those guys with the diablo thing) to make ends meet and possibly scrape together the ten thousand pounds for a 1991 Hyundai. 8) All the people who now can't afford a used car have to use public transport. Overcrowded busses now cause gridlock in every town in Britain. 9) The planet of the apes eventually. I'm not against the idea, or even having a new car, my daily was a brand new car when i got it (10 years ago now) And i thought it was great, i still do. I enjoy driving it as much today, as i did on the day i bought it, it is one of my favourite cars to drive. And i wouldn't try to convince anyone that driving an old car all the time is the way forward, it isn't. Old cars aren't for everyone, sometimes i wonder if they're even for me. I've spent the last two days bustin my knuckles on one of my rusty crusty heaps of pooh (see above photo!), and i genuinely wonder why, and i've still got atleast a couple more days of working on it before i am anywhere near done! I honestly question my sanitity, and to be fair, i am seriously thinking about getting an allotment, and just growing some plants! I mean whats the point of all this rust and curse word, and strife? Whats the point when i can jump into my nice newish daily which does everything i want it to do, and even goes well and is fun to drive? But, having said all that, from a tin hunter point of view, i think it's a shame that the government sponsored culling has taken so many. Especially when there are so many that wouldn't have made it either (like my Monza above which will soon be heading to the scrapyard as well!) I know, this makes me as bad as the scrappage scheme, except, my Monza is way past any point of repair unless you are some sort of welding guru with an unlimited supply of steel and panels! A point mentioned earlier, about young people buying new cars, in my opnion they are literally 'forced' into it financially. the reason is simple, insurance. Not having a child who is turning old enough to drive yet i hadn't considered this at all. You're right, with all the incentives that car dealers give you, including insurance etc, it probably is the only way a young driver can get themselves mobile. I wonder if long term this is a good thing though? I say this because, due to me having curse word old cars in the early part of my motoring career i learned a lot through them. Not just about driving them, and how to, but about keeping them drivable, and maintaining them. One of my friends is a mechanic type person for the RAC, and the thing he gets called out to attend more than anything is as he says, nippers in new cars who don't know how to change a wheel! This is a worry, and something i have prepared my five, and ten year old daughters for. The ten year olf can now change a wheel on the car in 13 mins! I know thats not that fast, but she struggles with the jack, and the undoing of the bolts due to being a ten year old child, and not having the strength, but she can do it. Incase you're wondering, i'm still having to do the jacking up, and loosening of the wheel nuts, and even lifting the wheel on and off for the five year old, but she's getting the idea, and she's getting there! But back to the point, are we raising a nation of people who can't do things like this, due to never needing to! But do we even need to be able to do such things when as 93fxdl says:- Another reason later cars are becoming scarce is an industry practice called "inbuilt obsalessence" where a product becomes unviable to keep, because the parts to service/repair become more expensive than the item is worth. Vehicles used to get killed by rust, then ecu problems became a killer, the modern executioner seems to be management warning lights, so you have a 10 year old car that is worth say 500, warning light comes on, do you spend 50 an hour on garage rates, plus assorted sensors at 50 up each. Certainly people here would fix, but joe public would just chop it in. It's not just cars, my parents had a tumble drier with a failed timer, a replacement timer was only a few pounds less than a new drier. Inbuilt obsalessence, will certainly be why there are no "current cars" about in twenty of thirty years time. But i feel i'm getting away from my point a bit. Having looked at what nomad wrote, and then following the link, I found myself looking at, as nomad says, "some sad but epic photies" HOLY COW!! There's some cool stuff there, just waiting for it's turn to be turned inot baked bean cans!! Seriously though, click the link, then have a look at the rest of the fellas photos, here's the link to them:- www.flickr.com/photos/131149436@N02/sets/72157651789509465/ There's some pretty cool stuff there! But then i thought, i dunno, the scrappage scheme was over a loooooooooong time ago, these must be old photos so i decided to have a look on Google maps, at Thurleigh Airfield Business Park. After changing to a satellite view, looooooooooooooook at all those old cars!! Admittedly, some of them are new cars as they also store new cars there, but, accorinding to the photos posted at www.28dayslater.co.uk, there's a good amount of old cool stuff there too! It's gotta be worth a day out! The thing is, if indeed all the cars from the scrappage scheme have not been scrapped, and are still sitting on the runway at RAF Thurleigh, then surely it would be worth the government auctioning them all off as projects to raise a bit more of that revenue that they all seem to think we need to raise! By the way 93fxdl, As the tagora is on your hitlist, I had a look on how many left, grand total of 9, cannot say it was ever a common car, I cannot remember ever seeing one on the road, and now the chances of ever seeing one are really slim, as all 9 are sorn I saw a couple on the road last summer, admittedly it was at the Simca Matra Talbot Rally held at Beaulieu, but they all drove in! the funny thing is, when i was a kid the fella across the road had one, and so did his wife, and so did one of my teachers. I regarded all these peoples cars to be a bit of a joke, now it would seem that the joke is on me, as i actually want one, and even consider driving to France and getting a left hand drive one!!

The question is are the scrappage scheme cars still there? How up to date is Google Earth's satellite pics? I know the one of my house is at least a couple of years old as the front hedge is still on it, and there are cars all over the lawn.

^ whs We had/have a tidy (posh ) Peugoet 206, lots of extras - including about 4 warning lights that come on when they want. 1 is for the cat, diagnostics show "cat is nearing end of life" but emissions are fine so it's just an early warning. try explaining that to a buyer or mot chap. another is brakes - 206s have a known weak handbrake switch, so the light comes on even if brakes are new & perfect... madness but the car is scrap value as it's too expensive / time-consuming to fix the warning lights I'd be taking the dashboard apart and pulling some of those bulbs if i was you, especially the handbrake one. Not so much for resale, but more because they'd do my head in lighting up like a christmas tree.

whereas I'd do the even simpler fix and sort the switch.

They've all gone now. The site was completely cleared the end of last year. Nothing but brand new cars there now.

Does everyone really think that the good stuff all got fragged?? A local fiat/ Kia place I deal with literally filled a barn with stuff that was too good to crush and I expect a lot of older stuff has been squirrelled away by canny dealerships all over the country

Hi, yes because of manufacturers pursuit of low drag co-efficient car they all ended up looking the same, 'jellymould' or 'euroboxes' were the nicknames at the time. cortina, vauxhall viva, hillman hunter, morris marina, datsun bluebird all looked the same in the 70s. i don't think bland identikit family cars are are a new phenomenon

I heard those were recent photos? Me too, these have been all over Facebook this weekend, all linked as new photos. I have no idea if they are new or old.

I saw this on the evil book of faces this morning, and I too was under the impression they were recent. In fact I've an idea whoever posted them said they were taken last week or something.

Whether the photos are old or new, the whole crappage scheme was a bloody ridiculous idea. Utter, utter madness.

There's a petition to get the Ministry to do something constructive with them. Seems a bit futile if they've gone.
