I know quite a few youngsters involved. Steam is both expensive and time consuming, engine ownership is normally middle aged onwards but plenty of youngsters on the crew. The National Traction Engine Trust runs a "steam apprentice" scheme to get youngsters involved with helping with maintaining and crewing such things which is very successful.
We were out on the steam roller yesterday- our regular steersman is 16, he drove her across the show site & I steered (I'm 26), I stayed on to steer her across town. Another regular driver is a similar age to me, it's not unusual for us to be out on the road with an average crew age of under 35.
Edit- if you are talking about the little I/C stationary engines that may be a different matter; they aren't the most inspiring thing in the world to be honest and probably appeal to the older gent who enjoys rallies but prefers a less hectic pace of life!

I live in Yorkshire, there's a large following of tractors and a fair few summer shows steam rallies traction gatherings etc, I don't think the scene will ever fade away although I have little or no interest in them myself.

When I retire to the countryside I hope to get an old grey Fergie or maybe a DB. That one above may be a bit much for me though!

... Point of discussion, although I have no real enthusiasm for old engines, what worried me was seeing only one young lad getting down and dirty with his own tiny traction engine. All the other engines were being tended to by older guys as described before the last photo. Will this old traditional engineering simply die out through lack of interest and enthusiasm in 20/30 years?? Have you seen how expensive those little Lister static engines are? I'd love some but can't really justify the cost. Maybe when all these rich old people lose interest I could buy a couple

I went to a very similar show up in Fife last weekend with lots of nice cars and quite a few tractors. There is definitely something appealing about them. I must post my pics too.
