What's it worth? BMW M5 on G plate (1989?) E34? 3X,000 miles

Hi all

As per title, a neighbour has a red BMW M5 on a G plate so think that's 1989?

In immaculate condition, garaged since new, mileage is in the 30,000 - 40,000 range - think it's about 36,000 from what he mentioned.

I think he's either the only owner or second owner too.

Always been a second / third car as he's a builder by trade so uses his van for daily use and also a motorhome for weekend / holidays nowadays so the BMW is a pretty piece of garage furniture.

The wheels are replicas that are fitted but he also has the original metric width alloys too (the tyres were so expensive to replace one year that he got a set of non-metric replicas with tyres for less)

From brief conversations i've mentioned that it could be worth a bit as I know late 80s / early 90s are coming into favour at the shows lately.

So before i get his hopes up too much and he preps it for sale can anyone give me a hint at it's potential value?

It'll be worth quite a bit, while not possessing the value of the E28 M5 desirability for the E34 M5 has shot up in the last year or so, base price is now 5K, average useable ones 9-12K, low miles good condition like the one you describe 20K probably more.

Although less powerfull than the later E34 M5 the early car doesn't have the potentially expensive electronic dampers.

Running costs of even a good one is still expensive, superb cars though.

Hmm interesting about the metric wheels I wonder if he's been bigging it up himself, I'll try to find more info..

Googling a bit suggests it's the M535i so still a Motorsport model but not an M5 as such, does this make it less valuable than the M5?

If it's a 1990 it's a 535i sport the same as ours, not an M535 which is the previous E28 model(82-88).
If it's mint with low miles these are fairly desirable in their own right,especially if it's a manual. Anything from £4-£8k is achievable depending on how perfect it is.
Sills are a known weakspot on these as there's plenty areas for moisture to collect under the plastic covers.

I've found out it's the 3430cc engine registed January 1990 so must be the E34 535i Sport?

It was out on the drive the other day but didn't get chance to speak, looked lovely every time i see it i just want to drop it low on deep dish wheels.
