Have you had any use out of this recently Trig? Do share! Hi, I've used it a bit, I done a 120 miles round trip to South Essex last month for a little car meet with the autoshite forum where it drove really well. My 1979 Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr My 1979 Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr Sadly it's currently in the sick bay though as the brake pedal drops when your foot is on it and we think it's the PDWA valve, which operates the fluid from front to rear, has seized up, I bought a rebuild kit and stripped it all down which was a bit of a sod to remove due to access and i ended up having to cut my nice flaring spanner in half just to get it in the gap. Anyway we stripped it all down, greased up and replaced new O rings and copper washer before slicing out hands back up refitting it. We then spend nearly a hour and a litre of DOT 4 bleeding the brakes again only to find brake fluid peeing out of the switch on the valve... So we stripped it all down again to find that one of the O rings had a chunk out of it when we pushed the piston back in, It looks like it nipped as it got pushed through by the little hole inside it for the switch, what a rubbish design!. Since then my dads been to a hose and hydraulics shop and bought a few more O rings but he hasn't had chance to get over to help me put it back together again. Hopefully I'll be able to use it soon!. I'm still hoping to get that Ital Van too, I spoke to the owner the other day and he needs to finish rebuilding a tractor engine that's blocking it in and then it can come out but he doesn't like to rush thing! And the Sierra has now been sold and living up in Yorkshire now.

That's an absolutely crakin Dolomite. I see one regularly at shows here and they do look fantastic in black. My dad had a Marina in that colour. At six years old it was completely rotten. Glad to see that one has survived. That Sierra looks to be an absolute gem and glad to see its ben saved rather than being stripped. Keep up the good work.

Hello again, I've been absolutely rubbish with keeping this up to date, where do i start?, Lets start with my Dolomite, me and dad managed to get sort the brakes in the end, after rebuilding the master cylinder again and the servo we found that a rear wheel cylinder was leaking, replaced that bleed the brakes, again, i got a pedal back again and they seem much better now!. Meanwhile this has happened... which thankfully resulted in this! Yay!, To be honest i was pretty worried so It was a massive relief when i passed! On that bombshell i decided to get brave and me and dad tackled the head gasket which was leaking oil which in turn was running onto the clutch making it judder. Off with it's head! The gasket was proper knackered so it was no wonder it was leaking, the head was also cleaned up. The block was also fully cleaned and the new Payne gasket fitted. head and rockers all refitted and torqued up. Now this was Saturday before last and where we had got too, over the last week my phone broke and I've got a really rubbish temporary phone at the moment with a potato as a camera so i have no photos for this next bit but yesterday dad was back over and we managed to get to all back together again, the lower exhaust manifold bolts were a sod to get back in but everything else was ok, then a quick turn of the key and it fired straight up, result! I gave it a good 30 mile road test today with the wife and our 3 month old daughter to feed the ducks at a village pond, it's performing brilliantly now, in fact it's a far nicer drive than my Mk3 Cortina 2000 XL. If it had a little more power I'd go as far as saying it's one of the best classic cars I've owned!. I took these this afternoon in a little village in Suffolk, It's quite the photowhore.

In other news i got my Cortina back home again for the season, I still can't decided what to do with it, It's pretty much spot on now but i never use it and i prefer the Dolomite to drive if I'm honest, I might sell it on soon but I've had it a long while and done so much work to it that it will be like selling a child!. And here's some photos of my sisters partners XR2 that i was chauffeured about in a few weeks back whilst visiting them, it's a genuine 39000 mile unrestored car that he's owned for 11 years and before that was 1 lady owner, It's minter than mint, goes well too!. 1983 Ford Fiesta XR2 Mk11983 Ford Fiesta XR2 Mk11983 Ford Fiesta XR2 Mk1Moving on, After i sold the Sierra i bought myself a modern Seat Toledo 20VT Sport, it is a bloody nice car to be fair with 180 bhp so it goes well but i prefer my old stuff and I've already got a sensible family car for the wife so i decided it was time for a retro daily again, now car prices for retro stuff seem to have gone through the roof in recent times, When mundane stuff like Mk4 Escort 1.3's going for over £1000 for tatty examples you have to question if it's worth it?. Thankfully i saw this advert on ebay for a Audi 90 2.2E well within "Sh*t car budget"... It sounded nice from the advert but it was 150 miles away in Nottingham, WCPGW? The next day (last Sunday) me and mate drove up there in his MG ZT V6, I slipped him £50 for fuel so it had better been worth it!, Having got there and looked at the car i wasn't so impressed, it was a bit tatty, the engine was running like curse word and the exhaust manifold was blowing like a good un, I started to walk away on the deal as it wasn't as described but the seller was desperate to get rid so he made me a offer i couldn't refused and i ended up coming away with it! Give the car it's due, after chuck £40 of fuel in it and driving it 150 miles home it was running much better and i didn't have any problems with it, the sound of that 5 cylinder burble is to die for! Proper lush like. So now it's home, what's it like... My 1988 Audi 90 2.2EMy 1988 Audi 90 2.2ENot too bad, it will need a polish, the rubbers on the bottom of the doors are tatty too. My 1988 Audi 90 2.2EThe interior is bloody tidy for a 151000 mile car and everything works like it should (other than the radio). My 1988 Audi 90 2.2EWhich has now been changed for a more modern USB thing, the quality of the speakers are awesome for a 28 year old car, they put my 2 year old Focus to shame!. My 1988 Audi 90 2.2EThis is the engine, hello engine. since this photo I've replaced the plugs and plug leads which were really old and broken up, that's transformed the running of the car. I've also serviced it and tightened up the lose manifold nuts, it's still blowing a bit but not like it was. My 1988 Audi 90 2.2EAnd that's pretty much it, I have a pair of new front shocks to fit as the front end feels bloody dodgy at the moment and tomorrow I'm planning on spending the day sorting out the bodywork, I'm looking forwards to using this for work and moaning about all the petrol I'm using!. I had one of the first of these, '86 on a D plate from about '97 to '03. Was a very good car - I put about 80k on it with 180k on it when I sold it - still running well. Fast, comfortable, quiet and surprisingly good on fuel. Used to take a severe thrashing to get it below 30mpg - which did happen occasionally as it made a lovely noise. The Quattros, especially the 20v are a bit thirsty, but then the 20v is a properly fast car.
Re the rough running, the K-Jet responds really well to fuel system cleaner and at that mileage it might appreciate a new set of injectors. They are reasonably priced and do make big difference to running and economy. If they've been run with sick injectors for as while the CAT (1 way) may be clogged - easy enough to knock the middle of it out.
Do the maintenance and it will go for ages - the 5 pot is a very durable engine.
I lowered mine with a Jamex kit. Sharpened up the handling nicely but ruined the ride. There used to be a Bilstein kit that was supposed to be a lot better but was too pricey for me at the time.
Enjoy it - If I saw a 10v Quattro in decent shape for sale I'd probably buy it........

Oh, and looking at your comments about dodgy handling - take a look at the wishbone bushes, these fall apart quite often (especially where cheapo parts have been fitted) and make the handling very scary. Subframe bushes can also get soft and make the front floatier than it should be.

Thanks Nick, I've been out and bought new wishbones, drop links, tie bars, ball joints and shocks for it, hopefully that will calm things down a bit at the front!. I've also had to order a new radiator as the old one has started to jet water out of the bottom and the alternator needed rebuilding as the regulator started pumping 15.1v into the battery! I've only done 20 miles in it so far since I've got it home and it's already cost me a fortune! Still, It's bloody lovely to drive, i tightened up the leaking manifold joint which has quietened it down a bit and the full service seems to have improved the performance and running of it, I spent 2 days cleaning it right up,. it looks amazing now considering the mileage, Only the rubber door bottom strips let it down, and I've got a pair of DMB numbers plates made up for it and dealer sticker which I'll fit soon. 1988 Audi 90 E 2.2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1988 Audi 90 E 2.2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1988 Audi 90 E 2.2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1988 Audi 90 E 2.2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr It's hard to believe there's only 9 years between these two cars. 1988 Audi 90 E 2.2 and 1979 Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr

Not much of a update to get excited about but to keep on top of this, over the last weeks I've been using this daily and it hasn't been bad, after doing a number of jobs first!. The first problem was that the radiator failed on me, the old one rotted out at the bottom so that was binned and replaced with a new one, another £60!, still i then treated it to a few set of custom made dealer plates form DMB, they look far better in my opinion. Then after using it for a few weeks with the most appalling steering and handling on the front end i replaced the wishbones, shocks, track rod ends and anti roll bar links on the front, not a easy job when everything is rusted up and seized!. Doing this made a massive improvement, no more bouncing across the road over bumps or crashing over speed bumps, I think the tracking mind need adjusting still but I'll get that sorted and MOT next week. Last Sunday i took it on a 110 mile round trip to a car meet in Norfolk, it was a pretty good day and the location made for a great photoshoot. It still needs a few jobs doing, mainly the exhaust manifold gasket blows making an annoying ticking sound, I don't know if I'll bother to fix it though so I don't think I'll be keeping it long, As nice as the car is, it's not really me, we'll see.

There's been a few more changes to the fleet since i last updated this thread, firstly my old Mk3 Cortina has now been sold on, I started to get bored of it and fancied a change plus the drivers seat gave me back ache so after tell my dad i was selling it he decided that he wanted to buy it off me which was the best outcome really so I'm now in the market for a new toy. 1974 Ford Cortina 2000 XL by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr So next car was the Audi, It was a nice car and drove well but it just wasn't me, i think the problem was that they are so well built and drive so well that they lose that older car charm, it honestly felt like a Mk4 Golf to drive but with a better sounding engine and I've already had a Bora and that Bora'd me so this felt the same. I said i was selling it on a classic Audi Facebook page and this lad from the Orkney Island messaged me saying he would have it, to be honest i did think, yeah right but curse word me not only did he leave a deposit but he turned up on Sunday at the time he said to collect it!. Apparently he had to take a boat, bus, plane, the London underground and a train to get to me! Mentalist! He messaged me yesterday to say the drive back was uneventful and how much he loved the car. He clocked up 803 miles driving it back! He's already fitted new wheels and exhaust! So what awesomeness have i purchased to take place of the Audi then... well... 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 L Mk2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 L Mk2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr Oh dear... actually joking aside it's a bloody nice car, it's a very late September 1991 Astra 1.6 L, 1 owner from new who retired from driving in his 80s and with 64000 miles on the clock. This car is proper mint, after a few days with my polishing mop and pressure washer i had it looking like this. 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 L Mk2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 L Mk2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 L Mk2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 L Mk2 by Triggers Retro Road Tests, on Flickr There's not many left out there in that condition! I've fitted a new front plate from DMB, sorted out a poor running issue with the carb (the only boy only drove 5 miles a week to Morrisons shopping in it for years, it's only done 14k in 16 years!), I've also fitted a new cambelt and water pump too which was a right pig of a job as the old water pump was still the original one, as was the belt and it had welded itself onto the block! In other car news the Dolomite is away having a new clutch and rear wheel bearing being fitted this week so hopefully once that's back i won't have the horrible clutch judder anymore!

Word spreads quick! Yes i'm gutted, it was stolen of my drive whilst i was working nights (I took the modern car in for a change), my wife opened the door at 12.20am to get the cat in and saw that it had gone, the dog barked at 12am, just as the street lights went out. We think they pushed it up the road and then hotwired it, they then made the most of the £30 of petrol i just put in it buy spending the next 5 hours racing around my local area crashing into everything and forcing cars off the road whilst the police looked for them and their helicopter was even out. At 5.30am my work mate messaged me to say a car was on fire in a wooded area near the Orwell bridge, a friend was kind enough to be also out looking for it so i told him about the fire and he managed to track it down in Orwell country park along a footpath. I stupidly left the disklok in the boot, let this be a lesson to you who think "It will never happen to me"!. The police have caught two well known 29 year olds at the scene who have been released on bail today but for obvious reasons i can't go into detail about that. I'm really sad to be honest, i know it was only a Mk2 but it lasted all these years with the old boy and was probably one of the best of it's kind left now. It didn't deserved to be used killed like that.
