Excuse the badly worded title, couldn't think of anything else to put. Basically the girlfriends car has the original registration which spells an amusing word, she's now looking at a different car but wants to know it it's possible to keep the reg from her old car and transfer it to a different car? I've tried googling but to no avail, I can only find information on private plate retentions etc, so any help greatly appreciated.

Any "private plate" started out as a normal plate it's just somone liked it enough to transfer it to another car so yes you can, the only plates you can't transfer AFAIK are Q plates and non transferable age related plates (the clue is in the title of those lol).

As long as the plate wont make the out to be newer - eg, a 10 plate on a 2009 car, you can make it look older tho

Apply to put it on retention and ask for a suitable age related plate to replace it.
Many vanity plates started off as original plates ABC 123 type plates that were transferred of the original car.
A friend of mine started out his driving career with a car that had an ABC 123 style plate that was actually his initials and it's been on every cars he's owned since.
These days people who don't know him assume he's bought it at auction or from a dealer. He does regret it sometimes as he's had a fair few cars and each time he changes it's £80 for DVLA but if he sold it he'd probably cover his costs and a bit more..

If you put your plate on retention or transfer it to another car, the car it came off will automatically be issued with a age related plate as part of the process. go to the DVLA direct and don't use a 'specialist' company as it will cost you a fortune in 'admin' fees.

Would like to retain one off my Astra, didn't know you could do this. I remember reading you needed the original car to be MOT'd to do a transfer?

Would like to retain K36RAB off my Astra, didn't know you could do this. I remember reading you needed the original car to be MOT'd to do a transfer? MOT is not always required - depends on when last taxed and if SORN'd at the end of tax period promptly and no longer than 12 mths on SORN from memory
